To Kill A Mockingbird Family

The theme of Harper Lee’s story To kill a Mockingbird is to not judge people by where their family came from. Scout doesn’t get to play with one of her friends because of his parents actions and how they live. “You should be gracious to everybody, dear. But you don’t have to invite him home” (Lee 224). Alexandria doesn’t want Scout to play with Walter because he is a Cunningham and she doesn’t like Cunninghams. She thinks they don’t do anything for Maycomb and are just a waste like the Ewells and are rotting Maycomb County. Scout tells Jem that just because The Cunninghams and the Ewells live the same and both don’t have much money that is doesn’t mean they act the same. “Naw, it was Walter- that boy’s not trash, Jem. He ain’t like the Ewells”

In the small town of Maycomb, Mississippi, the issues of racism, prejudice, and stereotypes are prominent in the lives of many characters in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. The main characters Scout and Jem are the children of Atticus Finch a well esteemed lawyer with an admirable heart, unlike most of the unjust white men in the story. Jem, Scout, and their close friend Dill are full of curiosity, vigor, and credulity; they are often found scouting out the Radley Place in search of the Boo Radley, who is quite vicious and psychotic, according to local stories and stereotypes. During the summer, the children try leaving notes, attempt to sneak a peek into the Radley place, and even create a game based off of the manic stories of Boo, but each attempt is to no avail and results in chiding from Atticus for…

Since the Ewells are in the lowest economic and social class, they do not have power according to their class. Although Mayella “tried to keep clean,” she “lived behind the town garbage dump,” which was not an acceptable place to live in Maycomb (Doc A). In the same way being in the lowest class made Mayella, according to Scout, “the loneliest person in the world” (Doc E). The Ewell’s were never shown respect, and this caused Mayella to be offended when Atticus called her “ma’am” and “Miss Mayella” (Doc C).…

Scout does not care what others think of her, unless it is Jem. Young females are expected to spend time with other young females by playing stereotypical games like tea party and dress up. Scout does not wish to participate in this type of entertainment, simply because she like to play outside instead, with her brother Jem.…

From both Atticus and Scout’s descriptions of the Cunninghams and Maycomb’s social hierarchy that they are a poor but proud family. Reasonable readers and Maycomb townsfolk, like the Finch’s, are able to see the Cunnighams as good people. The more one-sided and closed minded people, like Aunt Alexandra, are more focused and concerned with appearances and the so-to-speak “status quo” of Maycomb. They are only able to see the Cunninghams in the light of their lack of money and education and see them as nothing more than useless trash whereas the more open-minded people, like Atticus, value people for their inherent goodness rather than their color, finances, and…
