The first part of the quote, “before I can live with other folks, I have to live with myself” (Lee), means that you have to be happy with yourself to be happy with others. If you are mad at yourself, you are more likely to be mad at someone-even if he did not do anything. So before you can tolerate a person, you have to be able to tolerate yourself. That suggests that a person cannot live with himself unless he is being true to his own morality. If a person was to ignore his values, he wouldn’t be able to live with himself. If the world tells you that racism is acceptable and that it is okay to discriminate against genders or races and you think different- you believe it is not permitted to discriminate- that is your conscience. Even though the majority may say it is all hunky-dory, you can be that person that disagrees. That is what Lee means when she says “the one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience” (Lee), that your conscience doesn’t always agree with what other people
