To Kill A Mockingbird Essays: Breaking The Odds

Reflecting back just a few years ago, I had no idea that earning Boy Scout’s highest rank, Eagle, would have such a profound impact on me. Like many, I had heard the statistics - just over 2% of the boys who start Scouting, ever attain the Eagle rank – but it wasn’t until I got closer to that accomplishment, that I realized just why that number was so small.

The first realization of my growing maturity was in the diversity of merit badges I earned. I’m sure that when most people think of Scouting, they immediately think of outdoor activities, so swimming a mile, flying a plane, using dogs for search and rescue, sailing the Apostle Islands, or even scuba diving, would fit into those assumptions; however, it was much more than that. When I initially began Boy Scouts, I largely depended on my brother and his friends for help and assistance. Eventually, my brother and his friends around his age graduated, and while many moved on to serve as adult leaders, all of them eventually left for college. With this large amount of support missing from my usual routine, I felt lost for a significant amount of time, before I participated in a Philmont trek in the summer before my freshman year of high school. During the Philmont trek, as the youngest member of the crew, I felt highly unprepared due to my overall lack of experience with high adventure and large amounts of leadership; however, despite developing a blister on the first day, I found solace with my crew as they taught me valuable skills that would help me survive the journey. From their exemplary leadership and teachings, I quickly learned not only how to help myself, but also how to assist and guide others as a leader.…

If George Washington and Robert E. Lee were young men today, they would be Boy Scouts and enthusiastic supporters of Scouting, as I am. In fact, in his Sept. 1796 letter to Alexander Hamilton, George Washington himself promoted youth assemblies and behavior strikingly similar to Boy Scout camporees that would take place 125 years in the future: “…but that which would render it of the highest importance, in my opinion, is that at the juvenile period of life, when friendships are formed and habits established that stick by one, young men from different parts of the United States would be assembled together, and would by degrees discover that there was not that cause for those jealousies and prejudices which one part of the Union had imbibed against another.” In my literature class recently, we were discussing how a nation moves from savagery to civilization.…

Having the honor to serve in the Army is one of the most rewarding vocations I can think of. Not only will I be protecting the people of this nation, but also I will be defending it’s virtues, and upholding the tenets that make America truly great, namely freedom. I have always considered myself a true Patriot, and attending West Point and serving my country will prove the extent of my patriotism. My entire life, as short as that may seem to some, I have striven to better myself, improve my core values and sharpen my mental strength. As a younger adult achieving the rank of Eagle in scouting helped me focus on these efforts.…

Growing up in the military, allows me to personally witness this positive growth in character through myself and through my fellow military brats; moreover, it allows me to witness the false view on us military brats and how those negative views personally affect the way military children view themselves. Many people look at military families with sympathy and look down on the children who experience the challenges that the life-style brings; however, very few people look at these kids with admiration and see their strength. Through the constant moving, deployments, and supportive community, military children demonstrate to other kids around them that they are not just military brats who are "broken," but that they have positive characteristics that come from being in the military. Viewing these positive characteristics in the military children allows them to view themselves in a more positive…

Fox News had written an article about this situation titled “Eagle Scout: RIP Boy Scouts of America. You were great for 100 years.” Already by the title, Fox News got the timing wrong since when Boy Scouts was created. Boy Scouts was created in January 24,1908 making it 108 years old to this day, not 100. The article however, does have a similar contrast within the actual Boy Scout slogan which they quote “...growing boys into young men, and young men into leaders”(Patten 3).…

This past summer I set out to finish a goal I set many years beforehand. I began scouts in 1st grade, and since the beginning I set my goal to achieve the highest rank in scouting, the eagle scout award. This rank is the most difficult to achieve, but also the most respected in the scouting program. Becoming an eagle scout is a true symbol of a boy finally growing into a man. Before a scout can even start on this great task, they must obtain all of the other ranks before it.…

Boys Scouts has been a part of my life for the past six years, and it has taught me how to be courteous, helpful, and kind not only to others, but to myself. I achieved the Eagle Scout ranking recently, and now that I look back at all of the years of dedication put in, I have realized how much Boy Scouts has contributed to the building of my character. Community service helped me build a character on the outside, but being trustworthy and loyal on the inside were aspects of character I only could’ve learned by being social and trusting my own instincts. My character has also grown from my participation in the arts. I have been in band for the past six years, and music has become nothing but a passion to me.…
