What is it that makes a hero a hero? Do you need to have super strength or win a great battle to be known as a hero? Most people would say that is unnecessary, but what made Atticus Finch a hero? I believe that there are certain characteristics that make a person a hero. The Webster’s dictionary definition of a hero is “a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities.” I believe that Atticus fits this definition perfectly. Atticus shows acts of wisdom, courage and desire for equality; these all make him a hero in my opinion. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch is a widower living with two kids, Jem and Scout Finch. He is a lawyer and is appointed to be the defense attorney for the tricky case of Tom Robinson. In the case, Mayella Ewell accused black man, Tom Robinson of beating and raping her. Heroes that stand out to me with the desire for equality are typically civil rights activists such as Martin Luther King jr.. An example of his desire for equality is when Francis tells Scout that Atticus is a “negro-lover.” Atticus tells Scout “I certainly am a negro-lover, I do my best to love everybody.” This statement by Atticus proves that he has morals and that he is not going to let the words of others affect him. Atticus will also stand up and support the blacks even though it is against even his family’s morals. Another example is on page 5o, when Atticus seeks justice for Boo Radley by repeatedly warning his children to “stop tormenting that man.” This proves that Atticus has the desire for absolutely everyone to have equality. Boo Radley is a pariah in Maycomb but Atticus recognizes his right to stay inside and not be disturbed. Atticus truly feels that everybody has the right for equality and he helps stand up for
