Courage is the the act of facing your fears and rising up above all odds. Even with the scale of today's society, individuals can still stand up and make a difference. In the darkest times, courage can make us stronger.
Through all the ages, courage has always played a role in human civilization.Courage can influence someone greatly, giving them the strength to influence society, and even the world. In Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird”, a southern family becomes involved in a highly controversial case which puts them all in danger. “We were nearly to the road when I felt Jem’s hand leave me, felt him jerk backwards on the ground...I ran in Jems direction and ran into a flabby man’s stomach” (Lee 262). This quote from “To Kill a Mockingbird” shows the violent circumstances that the main character, Scout, needed courage to go through. “Bob Ewell stopped Atticus on the post office corner, spat on his face; and told him he would get him if it took the rest of his life” (Lee 217).“Bob Ewell stopped Atticus on the post office corner, spat on his face; and told him he would get him if it took the rest of his life” (Lee 217). For example, Scout was able to stop an entire mob attempting to assault a black man by reminding them of who they really were. Malala Yousafzai promoted education in Pakistan and opened the eyes of the world to the Taliban’s restriction of education for women. While the scale is much different, the effect is the same. The effect of a courageous individual can be massive. Additionally, both the characters in To Kill a Mockingbird and Malala Yousafzai were standing up against the majority, while they were the minority.
