One example is when Atticus, the lawyer trying to prove the African American Tom Robinson guilty says, “Doesn't make it right,” “You can't just convict a man on evidence like that you can’t” (Lee 295). When Atticus says this, he is showing that people always assume it is a crime if it is done by an African American. The author is showing that during the time mostly everyone was against African Americans and that they were treated differently. Imagine you are reading To Kill A Mockingbird and you are experiencing the guilt of always being in trouble and being different from everyone else just like the African Americans at this time. Another example is when Atticus commits to defending Tom Robinson in his case and the quote says, Atticus sighed. “I'm simply defending a negro-his name's Tom Robinson” (Lee 100). After already showing that no one in the time period wants to have anything to do with African Americans, Atticus steps up and decides to defend an African American which surprises everyone since unlikely. Imagine you are reading To Kill A Mockingbird and you are feeling the pain of the African Americans during this time period and having that feeling of no one wanting to help or support you. A good example of showing a good lesson is when Atticus says, “ You can never understand a person until you consider things from their view” (Lee 39). Atticus is showing that you should always put yourself in someone else's shoes before assuming anything. If students read this book then they will understand a good lesson of putting his or herself in other people's view to understand what they are going through. When Atticus explains this quote to Scout his younger sister, “As the Cunningham’s have no money to pay a lawyer, they simply paid us with what they had….” Come on home to dinner with us Walter, we would be glad to have you”(Lee 28). By explaining this quote, Atticus is showing that even if someone is poor, they are still a human and they deserve to be treated like anyone else. If students read this book then they will understand to never judge a person on appearance, and they should get to know the person for who they are. By having many good lessons throughout the book, this makes the book by far a good read and allows for people to become a better person why it should be taught in high
