To Kill A Mockingbird Dialectical Journal

I am reading, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. In the chapters 10 through 15 a great deal of events happen. In the begging Atticus shoots a sick dog, and the kids find out about the past of their father being a good shot. Mrs. Dubose makes fun of Atticus so Jem gets mad and cuts her flowers. As a punishment he has to read to her, later she dies and Atticus told him when he read to her she became free. Aunt Alexandra moves in, and Dill makes a surprise visit. In this journal, I will be characterizing Atticus.

G-First off Atticus can be characterized as intelligent and caring.
Y- caring R- stood up for Calpurnia R- defending Tom R- not getting mad at Dill
Y- intelligent R- always reading, playing checkers R-he’s educated, a lawyer
R-made Jem read to Mrs. Dubose
G- ultimately, Atticus is an intelligent and caring person. First off Atticus can be characterized as caring and intelligent. Within the story there is plenty of evidence to support why Atticus is caring. To start, he shows he cared is when he stood up for Calpurnia. Aunt Alexandra wanted Atticus to fire her because she thought Calpurnia was not needed anymore, but Atticus denied because he thought she was considered part of the family. Aunt Alexandra and Atticus have different views about family, Aunt Alexandra defines family with blood, but Atticus defines it by loyalty. Calpurnia has been loyal for staying with the family every since the kids were born. My second example of Atticus being caring is the fact that he is defending a black man named Tom Robinson.

Atticus knows he will not win the case, yet he takes it anyways. The people in the town think it is wrong having a white man defending a black man, although Atticus thinks it is part of his duty. At one point, Atticus states that, “I certainly am. I do my best to love everybody…” (Lee 144). One can conclude that he believes everyone is equal no matter the color of his or her skin and everyone should have the right to a fair trial. The last example, why Atticus cared is when he did not get mad at Dill for traveling 300 miles without his parents consent. When he saw Dill the first thing he said was to get food for him, so he was not starving. A fatherly instinct to a boy that is not even his son, only a friend to Jem. An illustration from the book is when Atticus said, “Just hungry, I’ll bet. Atticus’s voice had its usual pleasant dryness” (Lee 188). Here, this shows that he cared for a wandering boy that felt unwanted by his family. In addition to Atticus being caring, he is also very intelligent. The first way he shows his intelligence by playing checkers, and reading in his free time. Atticus was known for his checker-playing abilities, and how he could beat anyone in Maycomb. Checkers are known as a mind game because you have to think of moves, further head and compile different strategies in order to beat your component. He also read and spends a great deal of his time in his office reading, some men hobbies included hunting, fishing, and smoking but for Atticus is was reading. For him it is just one of his hobbies, but reading can expand your knowledge on a variety of topics. In addition to reading and playing checkers Atticus is also a lawyer. During that time most

For instance, Mrs. Dubose was vicious and racist to Scout and Jem, yet she proved to be strong and courageous in her final days. At first, Scout and Jem bluntly hated her. When Mrs. Dubose said, “‘Your father’s is no better than the niggers and trash he works for!’”, the shot had gone home. Out of hurt and anger, Jem destroyed the old lady’s flower bushes. He does not take advantage of people because of how rich or poor they are such as when he allowed Mr. Cunningham to stop giving him crops because he has paid him enough. Finally, because Atticus does not judge people based on their skin color such as when he allowed Calpurnia to stay with him because she is “part of the family” This shows integrity. Taking on the task of defending a colored man in such a racist town is very challenging but Atticus intended to do his best for his client. After the trial, everyone in the courtroom stands in respect as he…

For example, “Anything fit to say at the table’s fit to say in front of Calpurnia. She knows what she means to this family.” This shows that Atticus treats everyone, even Calpurnia, with the same respect. Atticus treats everyone with respect even if in return all he gets is rudeness or unkind actions. Just because Atticus is white, that gives no reason for him not to take Tom’s case into his own…

He shows this by believing that he must stay true to himself despite what other people think of him. “’They’re entitled to full respect for their opinions,’ said Atticus, ‘but before I can live with other folks I’ve got to live with myself. Racism had made Robinson’s fate of dead inevitable. “Tom was a dead man the minute Mayella Ewell opened her mouth and screamed”. In the particular place and time, it was simply because Tom was black and Mayella was white. In the era of 1930s, the whites had overwhelming power over the blacks who were seldom protected by law. Although Atticus did a brilliant job to expose Bob Ewell and his daughter’s lies and convinced most people that Tom Robinson was closer to innocence than sin, and it took extra effort and time for the jury to make a verdict, the sentence was still guilty, due to the predominance of racist opinion at that time.…

To Kill a Mockingbird Argumentative Essay In the book To Kill a Mockingbird the Finch family (more so directed towards Atticus, Jem and Scout) are treated with disrespect because Atticus had decided to defend a negro. In that age and time defending a negro was an automatic defeat due to the racism and violence. So why would Atticus put his family through a harsh time by taking a case so he would just to lose? Because Atticus has a unique look on the world, to set a role model for his children.…

Atticus, in contrast to many other characters in the novel, does not accept the institutionalized racism that is entrenched into Maycombian society. Instead, he fights racial prejudice because he views it as fundamentally flawed and stemming from a lack of empathy and understanding for those outside one’s social group. Furthermore, Atticus’ emotional investment in Tom Robinson’s case shows the personal level on which racism affects him. When discussing with Scout why he was defending Tom Robinson, Atticus explained, “… every lawyer gets a case at least once in his life that affects him personally. This one’s mine, I guess.”…
