Power is a huge deal in America it controls almost everything we see today, including the way we live everyday. The story To Kill A Mockingbird is about a man named Tom Robinson who was falsely accused of raping a white woman named Mayella Ewell. In Maycomb Alabama class, gender, and race run everything during this time of segregation. If you were a woman in Maycomb you had no say or any right to voice your opinion, you were not to speak nor talk to a colored boy during this time. As a colored man in this time u had no rights, you worked for the white and you lived far away from them you didn't not associate with whites, as a white man then you have all the privilege in the world unless you're the Ewell’s. My paper will be about how class, …show more content…

B)” she replied with “He does tollable, ‘cept when-’(Doc. B)” Atticus asked her “Except when?(Doc. B)” Atticus also asked her “Except when he’s drinking?(Doc. B)”and Mayella replied with a nod. In the case of Mayella so much evidence proved abuse towards her by her father when at the courthouse. Atticus said that “That Mayella Ewell had been beaten savagely by someone leading with their left hand.(Doc. B)” all evidence led to Mr.Ewell to be left handed because Tom could not hit her because he no longer had use of his left hand. Sense she was a white women claiming a colored man raped her turned her into the ideal southern women. She had never been popular among the whites but if there was an opportunity to convict a colored man of a hate crime they would jump on it. In the story you can hear many times about how the Ewells wants the whites life when Mr.Ewell seen the chance to become a white man he accused Tom just to find out “He thought he’d be a hero, but all he got for his pain was.... Okay, we’ll convict this Negro but get back to your dump.(Doc. A)” They had their moment to be a white family, but it ended faster than it began. Atticus told the jury and the audience “The Ewells presented themselves to you gentlemen, to this court… confident that you gentlemen would go along with them on the assumption--evil assumption that all negroes lie..(Doc. D)” right then Atticus had said that just because the Ewells are white they matter now that they're against a colored man. A preacher from the stands named Reverend Sykes had said “Now don’t you be so confident, Mr.Jem, i ain’t ever seen any jury decide in favor of a colored man over a white man.(Doc. D)” He even knows that a colored man can't win over a white man in a racial battle. Mayella had been powerful enough to end an innocent man's life under false assumptions, Maybe it was her dad who pushed her to lie maybe it was them wanting to be

Mayella is a part of the most dominant race, but her low class life and her weaker gender keep her from having power. What Mayella is seeing as power, I see as a weakness. In the 1930’s, race was a very controversial issue. At this time, the more dominant race was Caucasian.…

Throughout her testimony, Mayella does not seem to be confident about her answers. While answering Atticus’ question, in chapter 18 of To Kill a Mockingbird, Mayella is not clear with her words and hesitates : “No, I don’t recollect if he hit me. I mean yes I do, he hit me” (Lee 187). Logical inconsistencies in her version of the incident of the rape can be identified. Considering the fact that she does not “recollect” whether or not Robinson hit her, the reader is forced to question her…

In the text, Atticus said, “I didn’t think so: Atticus was trying to show, it seemed to me, that Mr. Ewell could have beaten up Mayella. […] If her right eye was blacked and she was beaten mostly on the right side of the face, it would tend to show that a left-handed person did it. This showed that Tom was clearly innocent because he was left handed and proved Mayella father, Mr. Ewell was guilty since Mayella was hint on her right side and Mr. Ewell was right-handed. In addition, Mr. Finch exchange with Mayella during her cross examination during…

Dogs are much closer to humans than one may think. Their loyalty is often reflected and expressed in a person’s daily life. When one first thinks of the definition of ‘loyalty’, the first thought that comes to mind is the undying loyalty of a dog to its owner or the loyalty promised in a wedding vow. However, loyalty is often expressed in many different mannerisms that are not always as severe or endearing and are usually not recognizable until the consequences reveal themselves. Usually, these tests present themselves as the major conflict in stories, such as the The Odyssey and To Kill a Mockingbird.…

He is on trial for being an accused rapist, but the audience notices something about him, his left arm is crippled , Atticus is in the testimony of Mayella, he explains to the court “He got it caught in a cotton gin...when he (a) was boy...like bled to death… tore all the muscles from his bones”(page 249). Him telling this to the court shows that he is incapable of physically harming Mayella Ewell. Another example is when Scout, Jem and Dill are present at the case listening to the testimony of Tom Robinson . Scout realizes the reasoning for Mayella to have went below her skin color to feel a type of connection with someone ,the explanation is shown by Scout thinking “As Tom Robinson gave his testimony, it came to me that Mayella Ewell must have been the loneliest person in the world”(page 250).…

Sadly Tom was the man who the Ewell decided to blame. They knew well enough that a black man would have no hope in winning a court case in which he allegedly “raped” a white girl. All of the evidence was clear that Tom couldn't do it but as Atticus said, “The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience.” Even though Atticus picked apart the stories of Mayella and Bob, Tom was still found guilty of a crime he didn’t do. As Tom’s story came to a sad end, there was another story…

Her loneliness compelled her towards a man who was the recipient of fierce hatred from the citizens of Maycomb, which led her, probably under the guidance of her father, to provide a false testimony in Tom’s case. Had Mayella grown up in a world other than the one her father dictated for her, she might have not felt the need to accuse Tom for committing a false crime. Tom knows the truth of Mayella’s desperate position and we can see it when he says, "Yes, suh. I felt right sorry for her, she seemed to try more 'n the rest of 'em-" in Chapter 19. Atticus knows it too when he presses again and again for Mayella to admit to the jury that her father would violently beat her.…

In the past, there was a lot of injustice, and there are a lot of books that showed it. A specific book I’m writing about today is, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. In this novel, Justice is influenced by age and race, and is distributed unequally in a small town called Maycomb County, specifically when; Tom Robinson, The Ewells, Atticus and his two children, Jem and Scout are affected. Firstly, the Ewells are allowed to do whatever they want, because they are lazy, and white.…
