The boy is allowed to be outside playing, but girls are thought to be lesser than them in the way that they only can do the tasks of a woman and nothing else. Scout, who has been raised by only a father and their maid Calpurnia, has always played with her brother and the dirt has been her favorite oasis. Her Aunt looks upon her with disgust since she cannot believe that this girl, who should be cooking and sewing is playing in the mud.
