The Light in a Dark Room “The only tired I was, was tired of giving in.” (Rosa Parks). That quote was said by Rosa Parks, the black seamstress who ignited the flame of America’s civil rights movement after she stayed seated when asked to leave her seat for a white man. Her courage to stand up to social norms gave way to equal rights for all races. In the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, there are many acts of courage that reflect modern-day events with others standing up for what they believe in. “To Kill a Mockingbird” is about a racially charged court trial in a small town called Maycomb during the 1930s from the perspective of a young girl named Scout. One of the main lessons to be learned is courage is needed to defy social norms. One of the greatest heroes in the novel is Atticus Finch. Atticus Finch is the father of Scout and fulfills the wise father figure role. He teaches Scout important lessons in a period of blatant racism. When Scout and Dill finds out what he has been drinking was only Coca-Cola, he explains, “I try to give ‘em a reason, you see. It helps folks if they can latch onto a reason...if I weave a little and drink out of this sack, folks can say Dolphus Raymond’s in the clutches of whiskey—that’s why he won’t change his ways. He can’t help himself, that’s why he lives the way he does.” Mr. Raymond does not care for what others in Maycomb think of him, He will even give everyone a fake reason why he has a family with a black woman, only because no one will understand the true
