Courage, the topic of this essay is courage and how it plays a massive role in the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird”. The interest of this would be how courage relates to the topic in general and in hidden meanings. The order of the essay will be “How is courage defined in this novel”, “What character(s) best exemplify courage?”, and also “What point does Harper Lee want to make about courage through her use of these characters”. Each of them will go into a depths of some sort where each could and most likely be defined in different perspective. The following list of characters have shown the most courage throughout the novel Jem Finch, Jean (Scout) Finch Calvin Baker (Dill) Harris. Reasons of how each of them showed a way of exemplifying courage is such as when they would go and try to bring out Boo Radley with one of their crazy plans. It also could be seen as they were brave enough to make a game where they pretended to live Boo Radley’s life in a sense. Another character that show courage in many ways would be Atticus Finch who shows courage informs different from the others. He stood up for a man of darker skin in which back then would be much disrespected to many of people’s opinions. Or to being able to shoot an innocent dog that has gone mad without losing it to sorrow in order to protect his family and neighbours. Points that are made during the novel is found primarily on page 112 where it says in a sense that a man with a gun is not courage. This tells the reader that it doesn’t matter who or what the person is doing but if that person is doing something outside his or hers comfort zone without fear and anxiety it can be called courage’s. In another way of putting it, one could say that it also means to stand up for what the respective person believes in doing. Each of the characters show a different kind of courage in the book which help to resemble them to why they act the way they do. For an example Jean Finch is courage’s about meeting Boo Radley and talked with him while also proving that he is human with a heart unlike of what others had sad about him. Another example that could be used is of Jem Finch where he will risk his life to do the things he likes and the people he enjoys being around.
