To begin, as written earlier, Jem doesn't ever even get mad, or read to Mrs. Dubose. In fact, she only pops up once in the movie, and that was for about a total of only 10 short seconds. There is a huge message given in the book that says you can't judge someone if you barely know them. In the book, Mrs. Dubose was a sick old widow who was addicted to morphine. But was also always mean to the children in the story. She was just lonely, and she was dying slowly and she knew it, so how could she be happy?
