To Kill A Mockingbird Community Discrimination Quotes

Communities in today's environment is very different then it was in the setting of the book, but still has its flaws towards racial discrimination. In today’s community, there are many protests and etcetera with how police and racial discrimination are linked together. In the book there are also many ways that the community is separated through communities actions, especially because of the setting of the book and all the discrimination that happened in that time period. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird author Harper Lee argues that community can be an ugly and evil place. One event that shows that community an evil place, was when Tom Robinson got the guilty verdict during his trial. There was plenty of evidence showing that Tom Robinson shouldn’t have gotten the guilty verdict for example when the phrase stated said “Tom's crippled left arm made it physically impossible for him to have committed the crime of assault or rape upon Mayella”(pg 218 atticus )and the quote “Additionally, no medical evidence existed to prove that Tom raped Mayella”(pg 214 atticus). For example in the book there were many times that Jem or Scout had someone to count on in the community, like Miss Maudie and Atticus. Also another example that shows that Tom Robinson really didn't rape Mayella but was at her house doing her a favor by fixing her dresser for her. Last but not least is an example from the book when after Atticus tried helping Tom Robinson fight his case, the black community rewarded Atticus for trying to help Tom Robinson and gave him gifts and their respect. So really the community isn't necessarily an evil place but isn't a perfect community and just has its flaws.
