In the novel, To Kill A Mocking Bird, by Harper Lee, focuses on many characters but Jem Finch plays one of the significant role in the story. Jem demonstrates various morals throughout the plot, that impact his thoughts and thinking. Throughout the story Jem exemplifies the importance of 3 major ideals: not having preconceived notions of others without fully knowing them, confronting your fears head on and standing up for what you believe is right.

To begin with, Jem establishes theme through not having preconceived notions of other's without fully knowing them. Jem always had an certain opinion against Miss Douse. He's the only one who realizes that it's time to overcome fears he had for a while. It took Jem to stay courageous by taking actions against his fears and decided to accept the dare, "I'm going, "said Jem, "don't hurry me." ... Jem threw open the gate and sped to the side of the house, slapped it with his palm and ran back past us, not waiting to see if his foray was successful" ( Page:19 Harper Lee). Jem knew it was silly assumption about Boo Radly and his house that the town talked about. He was scared but he also completes every dare that was given to him since day one. He took on the challenge and defeats his fear. Jem teaches us not to make our fears ever stronger that we can't face them anymore. Another way Jem demonstrates facing your fears is by fighting to save Scout, " Run, Scout! Run! Run!" Jem screamed" ( Page: 264 Lee). Jem knew no one else was there to save them. So he took on a role as being an older brother to save his little sister no matter what happens to him. It takes a real young gentlemen to protect his family. He believed that everyone is equal and stands up for justice until his father loses the case for Tom Robinson. " It was Jem's turn to cry. His face was streaked with angry tears as we made our way through the cheerful crowd." It ain't right" (Page:214 Lee). Jem loses faith in humanity since he was so sure that his father will win the case. Jem supported his father thinking Tom Robinson was innocent and society would listen to the truth. But unfortunately, that wasn't the case, no one listened to the actually truth they all blindly blamed the one who they consider was "black" and were raciest towards that person.
