Their father Atticus was the lawyer for Tom Robinson, the person being accused. Scout is the first person to get upset over the people talking poorly about Atticus when Mrs. Dubose would call Atticus a “negro lover” to her and Jem’s faces, but Atticus would tell them “ Negro-lover is just one of those terms that don’t mean anything -- like snot-nose. It’s hard to explain -- ignorant, trashy people use it when they think somebody’s favoring Negroes over and above themselves” (Lee 144). Even part of their own family is extremely upset about what he is doing. One christmas Scout’s cousin, Francis, comes to the her house and he tells her that “ I guess it ain’t your fault if Uncle Atticus is a Negro-lover besides, but I’m here to tell you it certainly does mortify the rest of the family” (Lee 110). Scout stops him from saying anything more and starts to fight him because she is so angry. Her own family is harassing her father defending a black man, but most of the hate is going towards her and Jem even though they have nothing to do with the case. All of this hat is coming from a single case and Tom Robinson is at the center of the hatred and

The wheels have to endure all of the bumps, rocks, mud, and water, yet a family will not move anywhere unless the wheels are on the wagon.
