Starting off, I will be characterizing Atticus. Ethical is a word I feel suits his character well. Firstly, Atticus defends Tom Robinson, a black man, accused of rape by a white family. Despite Maycomb’s racist sentiment, Atticus feels obligated as a lawyer to defend Tom. He admits that, “…I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this country in the legislature…” (Lee, 100), showing that he holds strong feelings and morals when it comes to his job, which he takes very seriously, as a profession and something that he believes can change his views in life, personally. Secondly, Atticus refuses to shoot out of sport and does so only out of necessity, despite being a deadly shot. After the fiasco with the rabid dog, Miss Maudie tells Scout and Jem that, “ If your father’s anything it’s civilized in his heart…think maybe put his gun down when he realized that God had given him an unfair advantage over most living things” (Lee, 130). This shows that Atticus is sensitive to other living things and as a modest, religious man, feels it is immoral to harm creatures for fun, only shooting the dog to defend the neighborhood, following one of his ethics.
