Throughout the story, there were many times when Atticus and Jem had to step in to make Scout apologize. Jem has grown up and he knows that he needs to have his sister be respectful toward others. Jem understands that Aunt Alexandra came to live with them to help Atticus with the children. He teaches Scout that Alexandra is trying to help and that she needs to respect her. This is also shown when Lee wrote, “‘Come on, Scout,’ he whispered.…
The first thing Aunt Alexandra said when she walked in the door was “Put my bag in the front bedroom, Calpurnia’’ (Lee 144). Scout is not a big fan of her at all, one day Aunt Alexandra asked Scout to come in the room and speak to the ladies. When Scout came to the door Aunt Alexandra always looked at her as if she hated her request. One day Scout was stopped again and Aunt Alexandra practically bragged about Scout's cousin Lily…
Aunt Alexandra and Atticus didn’t always see eye to eye on how Scout should be raised. Since Atticus had been raising Scout alone since she was two, he had never forced her to act like a girl, as it was something he probably wasn’t familiar with and wouldn’t have been able to teach. He simply wished that Scout would make her own decisions and learn from her own experiences. Jem was taught by Atticus, since Atticus was a gentleman Jem simply had to observe. For Scout though, observing wouldn’t have been enough.…
Aunt Alexandra brought scout her overalls “here put these on darling” (292) She didn't even think twice about scout not wearing a dress which was always super important to Alexandra. Throughout To Kill A Mockingbird the sexism, racism, and prejudice seem to diminish for Aunt Alexandra. She realizes the vast amount of prejudice is pointless. she sees that scout is strong and smart even if she is not wearing a beautiful dress or acting lady like.…
This differs in To Kill a Mockingbird in such that Aunt Alexandra bosses around scout to help her grow up the best she can be. For example, “Aunt Alexandra met us and nearly fainted when Calpurnia told where we were” (Lee 282). This highlights the fact that Aunt Alexandra genuinely cares about the kids and the things she does is out of love. She shows that being a lady means being respectful unlike Hilly. The role of women is shown very differently in these two pieces of literature.…
Maturity is a flower that doesn’t grow in everyone's garden. Take me for example, in first grade I would chase the people and give them hugs on the playground every recess. In the book “To Kill a Mockingbird,” Jem finch starts without a flower of maturity and empathy in his garden. Over the course of the book “To Kill a Mockingbird,” Jem Finch changes from a boy into a young man by developing a feeling of empathy and developing a sense of maturity.…
When Atticus comes home and tells Miss. Maudie, Aunt Alexandra, and Scout that Tom Robinson is dead, Scout knows it is not acceptable to act how she usually does with her Aunt. She states at the party, “After all, if Aunty could be a lady at a time like this, so could I” (Lee, 318). All throughout the book Scout has disliked her Aunt and has done the opposite of what she wants. She always wanted Scout to act like a lady but that just was not who Scout was.…
When Scout says “join them for refreshments”, she demonstrates how she could act civil and participate with her aunt when inside, she didn’t want to. Scout didn’t argue with any of the other ladies there when they talked about subjects Scout didn’t agree with. Scout got mad at Cecil Jacobs for calling Atticus out for “defending niggers” and she said, “Atticus had promised me he would wear me out if he ever heard of me fighting anymore; I was far too old and too big for such childish things” (Lee 99). Scout chose to promise her dad instead of beating up Cecil. Atticus and Jem wanted Scout to be more girly than a boy.…
As a result of this Aunt Alexandra really upsets Scout. I’m sure it wasn’t on purpose however Scout was not very happy with her Aunt. Jem attempted to calm her down but it didn’t really work. Scout even says “She doesn’t like me, that’s all there is too it” (225). Scout feels hated by her aunt.…
Why is it a sin to kill a mockingbird? In Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, a mockingbird symbolizes innocence. According to Atticus, “It is a sin to kill a mockingbird” (Pg 119). Three examples of mockingbirds are, Mayella Ewell, Tom Robinson, and Boo Radley.…
Harper Lee once said “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.” This problem still happens today, everyone judges a person without evening knowing them. When someone judges someone with tattoos and piercings they automatically think he is a bad guy but that isn’t always true. Their point of view can be totally wrong but they would never know. They will never get to truly know the person because their point of view shows them as bad people.…
There are some people who fit the definition of a mockingbird as defined in the book How to Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. My little sister Lyla is someone in my life who at only nine years old shows all the characteristics of being a mockingbird. One of the main traits possessed by mockingbirds is the desire to help others. Lyla displays this trait everyday by helping around the house with chores and yard work that aren’t her responsibility. One time she did all of my chores for me, just to take away some of the stress I had that day.…
To Kill a Mockingbird is a great book showing how people can grow together. We have Scout and Jem growing up together in an innocent childhood growing into adulthood. We have Tom Robinson, an African American man who, is going to court with Atticus Finch (scouts father) and is trying to defend Tom against the harming white community. Tom Robinson was accused of rape of a white female Mayella. The raping of a white woman by a black man is similar to The Scottsboro Trial in 1933, where 9 black men were falsely accused of raping two white women.…
Imagine a wagon with wooden wheels, helping a family move across a valley. The wheels have to endure all of the bumps, rocks, mud, and water, yet a family will not move anywhere unless the wheels are on the wagon. This is similar to the idea of empathy that Harper Lee is trying to emphasize through Atticus. In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, she keeps proving through Atticus that even though being truly empathetic toward someone less fortunate than you may bring them down in society, standing up for one another could also make a whole society respect one another.…
To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a story about two young siblings, Jeremy Atticus Finch, or Jem, and Jean Louise Finch who is mostly referred to as Scout and is the narrator of the story. To Kill A Mockingbird takes place in the deep south called Maycomb, Alabama. Jem and Scout are the major characters in the story, however, there are very important minor characters. Calpurnia, Dill, Heck Tate, and Walter Cunningham are all minor characters that have a significant impact. Minor characters are not major characters for a reason, but still have a significant impact on the story because they help contribute to many of the subplots which help develop the story as a whole.…
