The theme of Appearance vs Reality is a prevalent aspect within the texts of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, The Pursuit of Happyness by Gabriele Muccino, Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare and Tihei Mauriora by Henare Dewes. This theme is largely implemented into the texts via the medium of character. This theme has also been used to to of discrimination into the texts through how the nature of people is judged based on appearance.

It does this through the character of Chris Gardner. Although in a way similar although in the opposite way to Atticus Chris attempts to appear more equal to others by hiding his bad financial situation. Gardner hides this fact mainly by wearing a suit, this action is not common of people in a bad financial situation to do thus this hides his situation making him appear to be more equal with the majority of the population. Gardner also hides this by lying, such as when gardner is asked why he is carrying around a suitcase which hold all of his possessions he lies, saying that he is helping a friend to move. So in a way similar to Atticus Chris hides features of his character in order to increase the equality between him and the people he is around, however, instead of hiding his strengths, like Atticus, he hides his weaknesses. How Gardner hides his true financial situation gives the audience an insight on the discrimination that existed toward the homeless and the poor, how people look down upon them despite many of them not being able to get out of their situation. However, gardner managed to get out of this situation which may be the reason that people in a bad financial situation are looked down upon. The character of viola has chosen to disguise her gender and pretends to be the male Cisario. This is an immediate representation of the theme of appearance vs reality. This disguising of one's self is similar to the actions of Chris Gardner from the film The pursuit of happiness.Viola, like Gardner, hides her true self in order to change the way people think of her. However the motives behind thes character are different. Viola hides her identity in order to protect herself as she is unmarried while chris does this in order to avoid the negativity that is associated with being homeless. This choice from Viola to hide a weakness contrasts to the actions of Atticus who instead chooses to hide a weakness. Tender because it is viewed as a weakness is a form of discrimination as sexism.
