She is now diplomatic liberal of the story. Atticus was the eye opener to multi-cultural view, when he chooses to defend Tom. Now that Scout is older she speaks up to her father racist ways and puts herself at a lot of risk to do so. She does this primary when she sits down with Atticus and asks him why he is openly attending white supremacy meetings and what this means for the Finches as a family. . Law and identity are the thematic issues introduced in both of the novels. Law is portrayed in To Kill a Mockingbird under Tom Robinson jurisdiction. He did not receive a fair trial because Tom was outnumbered by the entirety of a white jury. The only reason he is being prosecuted is because it is “what makes sense in the eye” of a segregated society. Atticus is a lawyer but now does not value law as he did when defending Tom Robinson. His white supremacy ideals disrupt his good character and evolves another side of him. He makes remarks about African American lawyers invading what he believes should be an all white jury. The NAACP delivers justice to the American people and Atticus doesn’t by it. He discusses the flaws and his personal opinions of protecting African American rights.
We also see the theme of law put into play in Go Set a Watchmen when Atticus changes his standpoint of his racism and the law. This conflict between Atticus and his job as a lawyer endure the real definition of justice. How can someone represent the law if they don’t agree with it? This ongoing theme alters our perceptions of Atticus’s integrity. Contemporary racism doesn’t jeopardize Atticus’s career because he keeps it out of the court room.
