Scout’s honor!” Trixi promised eagerly while dragging me towards a path. “And guess what? I’ve even checked out some paths that could take us to the mountain! Aren’t I so prepared?”
“Prepared to fail, that’s what,” I mumbled under my breath, “And you aren’t a scout, nor do you have any honor.” We had been trekking through the jungle for about four hours when we arrived at the foot of the immense mountain, it’s peak barely visible from where we were standing. If I had been more perceptive, maybe I would have been able to notice the thin wisps of smoke emerging from the top and the subtle tremors of the earth.
We stood silently for a minute, admiring the mountain until Trixi spoke up. “I want to go up the mountain, not all the way but I want to get a better view and then we can go home.”
I shrugged my shoulders, “Guess that’s fine with me.” Trixi beamed up at me with a toothy smile, eyes sparkling. We had made it up about a quarter of the way to the top when the ground started to rumble violently. The wind picked up and the air felt blisteringly hot, every lungful made me feel like I was being scorched from the inside
