In the small town of Maycomb, Mississippi, the issues of racism, prejudice, and stereotypes are prominent in the lives of many characters in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. The main characters Scout and Jem are the children of Atticus Finch a well esteemed lawyer with an admirable heart, unlike most of the unjust white men in the story. Jem, Scout, and their close friend Dill are full of curiosity, vigor, and credulity; they are often found scouting out the Radley Place in search of the Boo Radley, who is quite vicious and psychotic, according to local stories and stereotypes. During the summer, the children try leaving notes, attempt to sneak a peek into the Radley place, and even create a game based off of the manic stories of Boo, but each attempt is to no avail and results in chiding from Atticus for…
There were many similarities, and differences between the novel and the movie . Things such as characterterization, also the way characters developed through out the story , and the setting of Maycomb , and it's importance . Also the themes , throughout both the movies and the novel . Not all the characters from the novel were part of the movie . Due to that a few scenes were omitted .…
“Close that curtain, Jessie, I have no wish to regard my garden and examine the destruction caused by that, horrible little boy.” “That’s more appropriate, now where’s my tea, go and fetch it at once!” “Maids, what’s becoming of them, acting as though they are equals to us white folk, it’s simply not allowed!” Crossing my arms I lean back and ponder the situation “It doesn’t help this situation when no one listens to my opinion, sure they believe there’s a difference between themselves and their maids, however they have no idea how alike they appear.” “Finally back Jessie?…
Harper Lee once said “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.” This problem still happens today, everyone judges a person without evening knowing them. When someone judges someone with tattoos and piercings they automatically think he is a bad guy but that isn’t always true. Their point of view can be totally wrong but they would never know. They will never get to truly know the person because their point of view shows them as bad people.…
In society there are the people that stand up for what they believe in, and there are people that are scared to stand up for what they believe in. In To Kill Mockingbird and The Help, both Scout and Skeeter demonstrate the quality of showing respect for their beliefs. Skeeter lives during the 1960 's, A time where discrimination is at an all-time high. For example most whites lived in huge houses and had a lot of money while African-Americans lived very poor and were working as the whites maids. While Skeeter is in her early 20s, Scout is just starting her life as a young girl.…

Officers arrived to Chungs house and asked him if he had any dogs and if they could search his home. Chung denied owning any pets and also denied the entry of the officers into his house. While officers spoke with Chung outside of his house, one of them claimed to hear a sob coming from Chungs house. Believing that an animal was in danger, the two police officers entered Chungs home without a search warrant.…
To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, portrays a young girl and her journey through the racist southern town she inhabits. Harper Lee uses her characters in the novel to present a prejudiced place occupied by people of changing opinions and people of traditional opinions. Jem Finch, Scout’s older brother, is a boy coming-to-age as he begins to learn of the unfairness in Maycomb. After Jem touches Boo Radley’s house, he takes a big step towards becoming an adult. “Growing old is mandatory. Growing up is optional” (Chili Davis). As the quote explains how aging is mandatory and maturing is not for everybody, it ties into Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird and the growing up process for many characters. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee portrays growing up by showing how characters that matured, have a fresh look at the world accordingly criticizing its flaws.…
To Kill a Mockingbird is a great book showing how people can grow together. We have Scout and Jem growing up together in an innocent childhood growing into adulthood. We have Tom Robinson, an African American man who, is going to court with Atticus Finch (scouts father) and is trying to defend Tom against the harming white community. Tom Robinson was accused of rape of a white female Mayella. The raping of a white woman by a black man is similar to The Scottsboro Trial in 1933, where 9 black men were falsely accused of raping two white women.…
The look in her face the look of disappointment, the way her lip quivered at me, and the tear. The tear that haunted me that whole night. As I ran all I thought was how could this have gotten so bad, and how will I face my mother. In To Kill a Mockingbird the most significant to me was, “You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat.…
'It isn't fair, it isn't right,' Mrs. Hutchinson screamed, and then they were upon her. Her eyes shone with fear and rage and she raced off, her legs and arms flailing in a desperate attempt to escape the mob. " Don't let her escape! This is how it is, she knows that," Mr. Summer's drawled out, clearly trying to keep calm.…
There are many differences between the movie and the book. One reason is the air raids were much worse in the movie. In the book there weren’t as many air raids, but when there were they weren’t nearly as bad as in the movie. Additionally, the movie has more scenes than the book. For example, the movie had two thief scenes when the book only had one.…
My kids thought that I was useless. I couldn’t do anything. I wasn’t as cool as the other dads around town. I knew that I was old. I knew that my kids thought I couldn’t do anything…
