As a country, America does not need to reinstate the draft. History has shown that todays all volunteer service has made this country’s military the best in the world. While there may be a myriad of reasons for a person to join the military, be it education benefits, world class training, travel or retiring before forty, the bottom line is they are highly motivated and rightfully proud.
But today’s military has to be faster and more responsive than in the past and it takes several years to develop a top-flight Soldier, Sailor, Airman or Marine. From the day recruits join the Corps they must understand that they are going to deploy. They must be physically and mentally ready. They must also be instilled with an eagerness to deploy — to be where the action is regardless of the nature of the mission.1
Recruiting goals have never been higher and each service is forced to turn away applicants. If the draft was reintroduced, would it be at the expense of those who would volunteer? Would they have to turn away a motivated recruit for one who does not wish to be there? The training one receives in the US Military is the best in the world. Not just technically but emotionally. American cadets who completed basic training rated themselves high on nine strengths—honesty, persistence, enthusiasm, leadership, bravery, teamwork, fairness, optimism and self-control, than those that did not complete their training. As a comparison it took Argentinian troops four years to get to that point.
