Grant. Walker was the youngest of eight children. Walker’s family lived in Eatonton, GA an area known for sharecrop farming, which is what her father, Willie Lee did in order to support the family, her mother worked as a maid. (Poem Hunter)
At a very young age Walker lost sight in her right as a result of being shot with a BB gun by one of her brothers while playing. Due to her parents not making much money or having a car it took a long to get her to a doctor which led to scar tissue forming over her eye. (Poetry Foundation) Several years later the tissue was removed, but by cause of the years of being stared at also picked on this led to her beginning to write poetry. Alice Walker excelled in school ultimately becoming her graduating class valedictorian coming out of high school. (Poem Hunter) After high school, Alice Walker went to Spelmon College in 1961 where she became active in the Civil Rights Movement. She soon transferred to Sarah Lawrence College, where she continued her Civil Rights efforts. (Whitted, Georgia Encyclopedia) Considering of Walker’s efforts, she had an opportunity to meet Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. while at Spelmon College. It is amazing to be able to find that a person know for one specific thing has been a part of history in so many ways other than that of Hollywood. Alice Walker wrote short stories, poetry, she is an activist for Civil, Human, and Women’s right. She marched with Dr. King in the 60’s and stood up for anti-war efforts in Gaza with the group “Code Pink”. (Poem Hunter) She has taught African American Women Studies at several esteemed universities and still continues to support many efforts. Now, regarding “the poem To Change the World Enough” we can take the current events with all of the officer involved shootings as well as look at what changes can be made to eliminate this problem. During a conversation my wife and I were having we agreed that the world of law enforcement and being black in America are two different places. Bringing both together could help bring both sides to a better understanding. A solution is having the community interact with police departments more along with persuading that more black people and anyone else of color get into law
