In the story “To Build a Fire,” the man doesn’t listen to anyone; he just does his own thing. The man travels in weather below 50 degrees, doesn’t cook any food, doesn’t go back to the camp, and then freezes to death. A theme from the story is to listen to those more experienced than you. A quote that supports my reasoning is, “The old-timer on Sulpher Creek was right, he thought in the moment of controlled despair that ensures: after fifty below, a man should travel with a partner. The man did not obey this advice and froze to death in the cold (79). This undoubtedly conveys to the reader that advice from the experienced should never be cast astray, or one could be injured and possibly perish. In conclusion, one should follow the advice of those more experienced than them because they have been in the same situation and triumphed, they know more about the situation, and one can become injured or even perish if they do not follow the advice. Jack London’s story “To Build a Fire” is proof that one must follow the advice of the more sensible.…

He wrote over a dozen books and was given the National Humanities Medal, and the Abraham Lincoln Literary Award. Manchester’s work, A World Lit by Fire discusses the era known as the Dark Ages with its Medieval mindset throughout Europe, the development of the Renaissance, and the rise of humanism. Manchester argues that the mindset of Medieval Europe was a simple one where the notion of “Self-identity” did not exist, and where life was centrally controlled by the Roman Catholic Church. People gravitated to the Church’s congregations to become a part…

That's what the quote by Philip K. Dick proposes to the understanding and interpretation of “To Build a Fire”. Philip K. Dick is trying to help us recognize that no matter how much we choose not to believe in something, it's still going to be there because it exists and its actuality.
