An American essayist H.L. Mencken once wrote, “The average man does not want to be free. He simply wants to be safe.” Well, what does one want to live good life? To be happy, live a free life, be safe? Have all opportunities to accomplish anything, like the American Dream? I personally agree with H.L Mencken; I believe that the average man always gains freedom but fights for safety. Freedom can come in many forms, unlike freedom safety is hard to find. We see this theme date back to Midlevel times. Would you agree or disagree with H.L. Mencken’s quote, why? What does freedom mean? Freedom is having power to act, speak, or think what they wish to think. By living in America we are automatically granted freedom because that’s what our country stands for. For example, we are free to go out and buy anything we want, we can think and speak our mind without being pentilized, though we may be judged. Freedom is a great thing to have many fought for freedom in the past, such as African Americans. African Americans from the slavery period may disagree with Mencken. As an American we give up some freedom to put laws in place to keep a safe community. For example, we give up freedoms like what guns we can own laws are placed to enforce this. If we all had access to automatic guns our safety would in danger. Laws are not nessacery to show who is dominate they are set to secure our safety and protect all. Another example, parents set curfews to keep their child out of danger. Many cruel people come out at night and sometimes target young children. So by taking away some freedom from a child protects them from dangers that exist in the world. America set laws because all wanted safety, everyone already has freedom they just want safety so they can live in the ideal perfect
