Tullane University Commencement Speech Analysis

In analyzing Ellen DeGeneres’ 2009 Tulane University commencement speech, in my opinion, was a combination of persuasive and informative. It starts off as informative and then towards the end it is almost like she is trying to persuade them that they will be okay out in the world after graduation. When Ellen begins her speech, she proceeds to tell the audience about her life before stardom, letting everyone know that she worked several different jobs that paid about minimum wage. Almost every college student can relate to that scenario, going to classes and working one or two jobs just to make ends meet while in college. Then she went on to talk about how she had no ambition and felt lost and didn’t know what she wanted to do. What college student hasn’t felt that way before? How many times have college students changed their majors because they weren’t sure if that was what they wanted to do for the rest of their life? Besides, it’s not just college students that feel lost and have no idea what they want to do or should do with their lives. The point is that most of us have been there at one time or another and we are all doing fine. …show more content…
It has taken me several years to realize that I am happiest working numbers, doing math. Like Ellen, I have also had several different jobs, flipping burgers at McDonald’s, Department Manager at Wal-Mart, bartending, front desk clerk at a hotel, working as a para-pro, and being a Latchkey Lead Teacher. I was happy with those, but not overwhelmingly so. I was at my happiest when I was working for the Fed Center doing audits. It took Ellen the loss of a good friend to find her true calling and the courage to finally be true to who she is. It has taken me to be laid-off twice in four years to realize that I finally needed to do what makes me happy and move

In 2005, David Foster Wallace, a respected author of that time, and one that is still critically acclaimed today after his death through suicide in 2008, gave a commencement speech to the graduating class of Kenyon College, a liberal arts college residing in Ohio. In this speech, Wallace tries to convince this class of adults about to enter the world where they will be full-time employees that even though the reality they will live in may be frustrating an hard to deal with sometimes, there is a better option that being bitter, cynical, and selfish. He proposes brilliantly and effectively through his casual and honest tone, use of the second person, and narratives that by “noticing the water,” or really seeing the world around us for what it…

The idea of transcending into or through a new context has applied, and still does, at a profoundly deep level to the entire existence, past and future of humanity. It is an important concept to take into account for the future. Transitioning into a new context can have serious repercussions, whether they be positive or negative. If someone is to move into a new situation, their personal attitude and opinions must change to adapt to the circumstance. A change in these values may subsequently lead to positive or negative outcomes, depending on the nature of the transition itself.…

In Michelle Obama’s Bowie State University Commencement Speech, she talks about the school itself and how it came to be the amazing university it is today, also how hard it was for African Americans to receive an education. Before the Emancipation Proclamation it was illegal for African Americans to receive an education. It was extremely rare for a slave to know how to read and write and if they ever were caught, they would have been thrown in jail or beaten senseless. A few years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, Bowie State University was founded and thrived helping African Americans, by giving them an education and the freedom to do so. All around the eastern shore, people burned schools down, smashed windows, sent death threats…

When studied carefully, the historical significance of these two documents become very clear. From the significance of the cornerstone speech to the south and their movement at the time, to the significant differing views the north and south had of then president Abraham Lincoln. These documents help provide, at least, a glimpse of some of the issues that were forefront before, during and after the civil war. It is therefore important to be aware of some of the implications of these documents and the effects they might have had at the time. Beginning with Alexander H Stephens’ cornerstone speech, we are able to gain some type of understanding of his thinking and ultimately the reasoning for his support for the secession of the southern…

The first thing I changed was the last two lines of the first stanza. I switched the statement that it was a Memorial Day Parade with the weather description since I felt that the heat was a bigger theme in the poem, but it was still important to state it was a parade so the reader could understand the context. The second stanza’s first few lines were changed because I thought the new wording incorporated the sound of the parade with the feel of being there. I thought including this detail would give a concise image of before the speaker was unwelcomingly kissed. The rest of the stanza remained the same because the words hard been carefully selected before to create that skin crawling sweaty feel and have the s alliteration.…

From the beginning of recorded history, speeches have a tendency to be influential as they connect with their audience and illicit a specific thought or emotion. Continuing this custom, writer David Foster Wallace delivered his compelling commencement speech aptly titled, “Commencement Speech,” to an audience of students at Kenyon College in 2005. His purpose is to make the audience aware of our ‘default-setting’ of thinking. His ability to connect with his audience via word choice and the examples of everyday life he provides, proves his speech to be effective.…
