My teaching background also reflects on my teaching experience in TK-12 classrooms. Involved in UCSB extension program I have ever instructed over 90 elementary and secondary diverse students. As a volunteered teaching assistant in the TK-12 classrooms in Santa Barbara School district, I work with TK-8 and 7-12 Grade students for three quarters, providing instruction and assistance of mathematics, science and literacy to them. Most of them are from low-to-middle income families and parts of them are identified as underrepresented students seriously in need of help. In particular the bilingual students made achievement in term of customized to the formal instructional context. Those experience reflect on my teaching value to close the performance

When I began reading Jonathan Kozol’s Amazing Grace (1995), I was struck by a quotation early on that described the South Bronx area of New York City he would further explore throughout the book: The houses in which these children live, two thirds of which are owned by the City of New York, are often as squalid as the houses of the poorest children I have visited in rural Mississippi, but there is none of the greenness and the healing sweetness of the Mississippi countryside outside their windows, which are often barred and bolted as protection against thieves. (p. 4). As a native Mississippian, I am not surprised that my home state was used as a barometer of poverty, but what interested me was Kozol’s interpretation of the different kinds of poverty that exist.…

“Without question, it would have pleased me to hear my teachers address me in Spanish when I entered the classroom. I would have felt much less afraid. I would have trusted them and responded with ease” (19). On the other hand, English-only classrooms consist of conveniences that bilingual education does not offer. For example, when placed in a setting where English is the sole language spoken, students are given no choice but to learn the language faster than they would if they were to be taught in their native…

When I received my first essay back with the feedback and the grade, I realized that I was not a really good writer.…

Over the first several weeks of school I have had the rewarding experience of being involved with the fast-track English 111 class provided by my high school and local community college. I have gained experience in managing deadlines, juggling prompts, meeting various criteria, and learning what it truly is that makes writing both correct and brilliant. Coming into this class, I truly lacked a general understanding of proper writing. I wasn’t able to write in MLA format, let alone understand how to execute a process-analysis method, or correct sentence structure. In these past few weeks alone I feel that I have developed as a writer and overall student, know having at least a grasp, if not broader knowledge, on how to produce quality, college-equivalent writing that has exceeded me past an amateur level.…

While creating the lesson plans for my 10-day unit, I made a template to guide me in my instruction. For the procedure section of my lesson plan, I have split each class into three different parts: theory instruction (12 minutes), assessment/activity (15 minutes), and singing (25 minutes). Theory instruction is when I am using my knowledge of student’s prior skills to expand on what they know, and teach new concepts that will link to those from before. During the assessment/activity, I make sure that the students comprehended and can apply what they learned during the first 12 minutes. During the singing portion of class, we work on learning and perfecting the repertoire for upcoming performances.…

If I taught this lesson again, I would write the facts on the fact chart in bigger print and I would have given more specific feedback to students. The fact chart was a valuable reference for students, but the writing was too small and that made it hard for all the students to see when they were writing/generating a fact of their own. I would also work on giving more specific feedback to students. This is something that I can work on in lessons that I teach in the future as well.…

Introduction The time I spent with my student during our tutoring sessions gave me a first-hand experience of how it is like on a student to teacher level. I learned a lot from my student, Kade, as I hope he also learned from me. During this time, I was able to observe his strengths and his weakness. I had to be flexible to cater my lesson plan to my student, so he could build upon what he learned and advance through more challenging activities.…
