Titanium In Sports

When I think of a material impacting a sport, I think the material has to alter the sport in some way, preferably in a positive way. It can make the athlete perform better (tight wet-suits in swimming), make the athlete safer (the advancements of the helmet in football), or make the sport more enjoyable to watch (HD for televisions).

The first sport that came to mind when I read this prompt was golf. From the golf ball to the materials used on the high-tech mowers, materials have taken the game to a new level. Just 30 years ago, golfers still used wooden golf clubs until, in 1990, the titanium golf club was introduced. From there, the titanium driver was produced which revolutionized the world of golf.

Titanium has changed golf for the better, making the good players great, and giving average players another thing to blame their game on. Titanium was used in order to make the club lighter and stronger because "Most titanium alloys possess the same strength as common grades of stainless steel, but are 40% less dense (the weight per volume area)." This allows the club head to be bigger which provides a larger "sweet spot." …show more content…
