Titania In A Midsummer Night's Dream

The Modern Wife What do you think of when you hear the words “The Modern Wife?” For me personally, when I hear these words I think of Titania from the book A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare. In this book, there are a lot of things going on with various characters throughout the story. On one hand you have Lysander and Hermia who want to run away and be married due to their immense amount of love for one another. On the other you have people like Helena who are obsessed with someone they cannot (but eventually will) have i.e. Demetrius. However, today I will not be focusing on those people I have just listed, no instead I will be talking about a character named Titania. In my opinion Titania is the epitome of a modern day wife; whereas her relationship with Oberon is an example of a modern day marriage. Oberon messes with Titania a lot and desperately wants their child that Titania is keeping from them. We know this because he says, “"Why should Titania cross her Oberon? / I do but beg a little changeling boy / to be my henchmen" (2.1.122-124). More examples of this would be …show more content…
Do I think that Titania love each other? No I do not because they both mess around with other people and accuse each other for doing so. I honestly think that neither of them even know what love is. To me it appears that they are always lusting after other people. Titania is very pretty and can be very suggestive and dare I say promiscuous at times? We see this when she tells Bottom, “Out of this wood do not desire to go. Thou shalt remain here whether thou wilt or no. [...] And I will purge thy mortal grossness so that thou shalt like an airy spirit go.” (3.1.154-155; 162-163) She’s telling someone that she just met that she loves them and wants them to stay with her. That sounds like lust to me. Yes I know she had the love potion on her eyes, but I could honestly see her saying this regardless of the

This quote displays Robin as a carefree and frivolous soul, who lacks responsibility. He dismisses his mistake as “fate”. The unfaithfulness of a man is also addressed here. Helena loves Demetrius but he does not love her back. This then leads to having an imbalance of love; one women has no man to love her while the other has too many. Also, the developed and balanced love shared between Theseus and Hippolyte displays contrast when compared to the relationship of Oberon and Titania, whose love is a quarrel and leaves the world around them in shambles. A Midsummer Night’s Dream claims that marriage shows the true and utter fulfillment of romantic love. Shakespeare has a way of pulling the audience out of the emotional aspects of this play and instead uses the characters to poke fun at the agony and annoyances of those who are in love.…
