Tisha Roth: Peer Mentor Report

Decent Essays
It is a pleasure to support Tisha Roth’s application for the University of San Francisco- Teaching with Credential Program. Tisha was a peer mentor for the Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) from August 2012 to May 2014. I have watched her develop in her agency, service, and purpose as a peer mentor with CAE. She served as a role model to CAE students and has undoubtedly demonstrated to me her compassion and optimism for growth in her students and in herself. Based on my observations of Tisha’s work and personality as a peer mentor over the two years, Tisha has proven to be one of the nicest and most diligent students I have supervised.

As a peer mentor, Tisha recognized the importance of her role in assisting CAE’s first-year students

If you travelled today to Duke University in Durham, North Carolina and asked Gochenour what is the most important thing she learned from Marian she would simply say, “As an individual I have more resiliency because of Marian.” Gochenour knows that if she would not have woken up an hour early every day of high school, she would not be the person she is today. She believes that because she made the sacrifice to go to Marian, she was able to easily push herself to be persistent in becoming a better student and also a better person. If Gochenour took the easy route and stayed in her small town of 1,500 people for school, she believes she would not be able to be the successful student athlete she is at today at Duke University without Marian’s guidance.…

It is a great pleasure to recommend Rachel Sitasz for admission to the Edward Hospital Student Volunteer Program. She is one of the most empathetic, kind, and exceptional humans I have encountered in my 14 years of teaching. I teach Rachel in my 8th grade advanced ELA class. Her academics, character, innate curiosity, intrinsic motivation, ethical standards, and unwavering desire to give back, have put Rachel in a class of her own. In fact, for the first time in over 25+ years, the eighth-grade team created a brand new end-of-the-year award for our graduation awards assembly.…

Over the course of a person’s life there comes a time when they encounter people who provide an incredible deal of support and direction for their future. This is particularly the case whenever it is related to the process of being admitted into an institute of higher education. While there are many people who had a significant influence on this process, I believe that the person who had the greatest influence would be my mother, Cindy Rose. Often times, students who are beginning the college application process find it difficult to maintain a balance between the work which is necessary for their traditional high school coursework and that which is necessary to become an applicant and eventually a student of a college or university.…

Growing up in New York City has been a wonderful and challenging experience. This city offers so many opportunities to its residents, but tapping into those resources proves to be a challenge all its own. When everything seems both immensely important and incredibly useless, a mentor or person willing to guide one through the academic process can make the difference between excellence, mediocrity, and failure. I am who I am because there were teachers, no matter how few, willing to help me connect the dots and come to realizations that I otherwise would not have come to. I want to help create that same opportunity for other students who may feel lost or confused by everything vying for their energy and attention.…

This past summer, at the Governor’s School for Visual and Performing Arts, I received a glimpse of my college experience. Waking up early every morning to finish last minute work for class, and staying up late on weekends playing “sting-pong” had left me in disbelief that this utopian academy would only last for four weeks. Being surrounded by supportive and intellectually driven peers is more than I could have ever asked for. The student body had convinced me that I had been living in the realm of high school for too long. Before Governor’s School, I had become accustomed to a class of disinterested students; I never knew what it felt like to be part of a community that was driven by the genuine pursuit of knowledge and a better world.…

After careful consideration and performing a close reading of the Statement of Educational Philosophy found in the "Grand Canyon University College of Education Conceptual Framework’, I selected the facets supplied concerning education, and began choosing what the meant the most to me.…
