The Tipton R-VI School District has decided to rid itself of anything connected with Christianity and even took down a photo of Jesus from its grade school library. The move comes after the Freedom From Religious Foundation (FFRF) sent a letter to the school board complaining about the practice of hymn singing during the annual high school awards program, Fox News details.
The publication notes that the students at the Tipton High School have always ended their awards program with a candlelight ceremony which involves the students forming a circle and singing the church hymn “Blest be the Tie that Binds.” According to FFRF’s letter to the school board, the practice is unconstitutional, especially because the hymn says the …show more content…
Elliott raised concern over potentially hurt feelings of the non-Christians because they are “are outsiders, not full members of the political community.” Not only that, FFRF spoke out against the school board’s practice of praying during their meetings.
In response to the complaint, the school board gave in to FFRF’s demands. In a statement issued to Fox, Supt. Daniel Williams said they reviewed its practices to make sure that they comply with the law. They have also banned their practices which were viewed as a form of endorsement of religion.
Renowned evangelist Rev. Billy Graham has acknowledged the possibility that prayer will never make its way back to public schools. In a response to a reader’s question on his official website, the minister said the law can boot Jesus out of schools but no one can kick God out of Christians’ hearts, The Christian Post relays.
Rev. Graham also urged Christians to help their children strengthen their faith in God. He added that people still have to pray for their country even if Christian practices are banned in public
