The Benefits Of Keeping An Active Lifestyle

Staying healthy plays a big role in the way we live our lives. Teens in particular spend most of their time on an electronic device and many don’t get enough exercise. Keeping an active lifestyle has simple health benefits now and in the future, can decrease your risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, and has been proven to act as a stress reliever. To further my point, incorporating physical education to the high school curriculum has immediate and long lasting impacts on the way teenagers live their lives.

First of all, as obesity rates rise, the risk of chronic disease rises as well. This means higher health care costs for the government. For every one dollar invested in promoting physical activity and healthy eating, the government saves six dollars in the cost of helping and caring for people with a chronic disease. This statement shows it is cheaper to maintain a healthy life style, than be treated for not taking care of yourself. Finally, as a result of the amount of technology in our lives, teenagers tend to not get as much physical activity which can lead to chronic diseases later in their lives. The Canadian Health Measures Survey put accelerometers on children from ages 5 to 19 and noticed that the older the age group got less physical activity which can lead to complications such as heart disease and strokes later in life. This means that teenagers in high school may not be getting enough physical activity and the easiest way to fix that is to implement it into …show more content…
Initially, performing a physical activity throughout the school day can help lift the academic burden of having to do well. If a teen is stressed, getting them back to recreational activities can help reduce stress levels and make them happier. This shows it is important for kids to have physical activity in their everyday and a simple way to complete this is to get them to have a physical education class for at least 60 minutes throughout their day. In addition, participating in physical activity has been linked to doing better in academics. At the age of 15/16, for every 17 minutes of physical activity for boys and 12 minutes for girls had a direct link to better exam marks. Not only does gym reduce the stress but it is clearly evident that it can improve academic performance. As a final point of interest, if you encourage physical activity, students or teens will become more involved in the school community. The Centre for Disease and Prevention Control states that poor physical activity has been related to poor grades. This statement indicates that even well-known government groups encourage having a lifestyle with physical activity and if you put gym into the curriculum for high schools, kids will easily be able to get activity and be able to improve their grades.
