Getting It Right The sun shone brightly through the glass windows of the waiting area, radiating hope for the beginning of another phase of life. All passengers boarding flight A73 proceed to checkpoint two is all I hear, it dawns on me, it is time to return home. After serving the Lord voluntarily for 24 months my time is finally here to go back to my family. As I experience a blend of joy and sadness I take those final steps to board the flight back home. There is no doubt that I have come to love the people of Nigeria and wants to stay a little longer if I had my own way! Later that evening I was summoned to explain the trick behind my success.
The work is completed, Phillip floods my bank account with twice the amount we had agreed as payment. An appointment letter from Phillip followed with a promise to double my current salary should I agree to work with him permanently. By now you know exactly what is going on in my mind! I am battling with myself on which side to take. I need the money, now I have an opportunity to make twice as much. With Uncle George I have a lot of time for myself, and could almost always fulfill all my ecclesiastical responsibilities. Uncle George finds me to be trustworthy and I had a very good relationship with Him. When there is little work to be done we spend the time setting goals and contacting potential customers among other things, we were more of a family than just co- workers. We are expanding gradually with three branches in two major cities. I am seeing to the recruitment of other technicians and I have ample time to start my school online. With Phillip, I am sure I would be earning much more money but will have very little time for myself, my family and the church. It’s a cloudy afternoon, it’s been windy from the morning. Clouds gather in thick segment as if to prepare for a heavy down pour. I am moving out with the cable gang, to evaluate a new customers premises. As I bend to gather some tools from their boxes I feel a soft tap on my back. I turn quickly wondering, who that could be, Uncle George stood boldly and starred into my eyes as if to discover my soul. He walks away quietly, after handing me a small white envelope. I was confused and started reflecting on my previous activities, because this was very unusual of him. The envelope was a cheque for my salary increment and a promotion letter. He learned of Phillips plans through a mutual friend and wonders why I decided to keep him out of the ordeal. I wonder now more than ever if I made the right choice. At least I have managed to keep his relationship with Phillip and I did not betray him for the
