Roots

Environmentalist. Feminist. Activist. 20 year-old Tina Yeonju Oh from Edmonton, Alberta is all of these things. Surrounded by family from whom she learned from a young age that advocacy is necessity and non-negotiable is what fueled her want for constant improvement.

50 Years

Most people when asked what they expect and would like to see happen in 50 years, they reply with some sort of technology based answer such as flying/driverless cars. “I imagine a future where Canada will thrive in the era of clean energy.” This is what environmentalist Tina Yeonju Oh, only 20, answered when questioned about how she envisions Canada in the next 50 years. Also, she hopes that Canada will be able to show both ourselves, and all other countries that we are a strong, buoyant climate leader regarding climate change and justice. Tina continues to work towards achieving this change (named one of Top 25 Environmentalists Under 25, delegate for the Canadian Youth Climate Coalition, formal for the Canadian Youth Climate Coalition in 2016).

Compare and contrast the hidden assumptions, undefined terms, statements without research, and errors in logic The first article that I analyzed came from www.ottawacitizen.com titled “Dozens of oil pipeline protestors arrested on parliament hill.” Firstly, the hidden assumption falls in the title in which it assumes that it was a violent crowd with most people acting in a rowdy manner. It goes on to quote an ‘organizer’: “[It was] the largest act of youth-led climate civil disobedience in Canadian history.” However, it doesn’t specifically mention what organization it was that this statement came from.…

Khailah Ayroso-Lunamcgee When Action is Needed Civil disobedience both negatively and positively impacts a free society. On one hand civil disobedience can have negative effects on a free society for the reason being that when there is a group of individuals going against the masses it causes separation within the society. But on the other hand civil disobedience has been proven to be one of the most successful strategies in bringing about change that in most instances was long overdue. History is the evidence of the effectiveness of civil disobedience. It can be seen not only in America but all across the world.…

Canada is still behind other developed countries when it comes to the amount of greenhouse gas emissions it has reduced. While other developed countries are decreasing its emissions, Canada's is climbing. As global emissions are increasing, the decisions that countries make now about climate change are crucial and critical. I believe climate change needs to be dealt with immediately because first, the effect it has on the economy. The overrepresentation of indigenous people is a substantial issue in our country that requires attention in order to maintain a positive relationship with the Aboriginals and remove any negative stigmatization against the indigenous culture (Welsh & Ogloff, 2008, pp. 492-494). This remains an issue in our society because there are increasing numbers of indigenous people in prison throughout the provinces due to systemic racism within the legal system, crimes committed due to socioeconomic challenges and cultural or language barriers (Fitzgerald & Carrington, 2008, pp. 524-525). Moreover, alternative courses of action should be addressed in order to decrease the overrepresentation of indigenous people in the criminal justice system.…
