Timpani For The Beck Analysis

Decent Essays
Michael had a wonderful final term! His infectious enthusiasm could be felt, perhaps heard, across the Hudson. Whether playing snare drum for the Smith or timpani for the Beck, he displayed excellent focus and commitment. As of this writing, rhythmic aspects of the timpani part are difficult for him, but he'll have it solved by concert time. Going forward, Michael, we'll lower your stroke height on all the instruments and work on dynamic control. Do not reduce your enthusiasm, only your volume :-) Have a great

According to Niya, there's nothing more satisfying than the improvement you've made after each chair test. Niya started out in the fifth grade strings program at her school, joining simply because it seemed like something fun to do in her free time, but since then it has become a lot more than that. "My private lessons teacher has definitely inspired me to strive," she explains.…

Oh how I wanted to scream my warrior growl right then and there. All those months of torturous practice: crying after repeatedly playing the wrong note, blistered and bandaged finger tips, sleepless nights after sleepless nights, all for this one monumental moment. All for this one chance to show that I have reconditioned Handel’s 5th Sonata into my own creation. All for this one chance to connect with my fellow human beings through the universal language of music. All for this one chance to imprint my lasting legacy alongside the hundreds who have been privileged to play at Severance…

Mando had a wonderful final term. He played all of his music with great enthusiasm and accuracy, and his demeanor was exemplary. Exceptional too was his ability to hear and follow instructions the first time; not necessarily a sixth grade strength :-) Remember, Mando, the door to the Percussion Ensemble remains wide open to you should you change your mind about your Arts enrollment. Have a great…

The intro is over, and the saxes are in. The time is ours to shine. I begin to think about everything that I have done wrong. All the moments I could’ve placed more time in my music instead of hanging out with my friends. Suddenly, a more familiar voice rings in my head in this unfamiliar territory.…

For my concert critique, I went to Jason Terry’s Doctoral Piano Recital on Tuesday, December 1st at the School of Music in room 206. Because Terry was able to pick the pieces he played, he picked a range of different pieces to emphasize his wide range of talent. He included older and modern pieces including Bach, Godowsky, Balakirev, Zorn, and Liszt. The first piece he played was “Prelude & Fugue, BWV 872” composed by Bach. I was a little unsure about the nature and form of this piece because it was unlike some of the more structured pieces we listen to in class.…

My paper’s approach to Louis Armstrong’s small band performance in Australia is organized by song. In each of these song sections, I describe what is generally going on. Intermixed amongst my musical review, I also interject my personal feelings and perceptions to what is occurring. I have organized my structure this way in order to provide a methodical structure to my analysis. Louis Armstrong starts playing the trumpet in the first song, “When It’s Sleepy Time Down South,” almost immediately after walking onto the stage.…

I sat in a crowded auditorium with nothing but my thoughts before I tried out for the Contra Costa County Honor Band. After about two hours I was led into the audition room drenched in sweat with my oboe in my trembling hand. I managed a pretty good audition, but after replaying the audition over and over in my head I doubted whether I would get in. A week later, my band director congratulated me on making principal oboe and handed me Maslanka's Symphony 7, with about 4 parts marked solo in bold letters.…

“Stick to flute” is something I’ve heard from a few people while I was trying new things. Mr. Briem, one of the band teachers, took this the opposite direction and started me on a path to unknowingly end up like him. He encouraged me to explore music; that encouragement drove me in my first three years of high school to develop my musical skills. Briem introduced me to the potential I had for growing musically. He saw something in me that no one else did, and I didn't know at the time, but I’d later draw inspiration from that in a different setting.…

Steve Reich, a Minimalist composer and artist, has been composing music since he was about 14 years old (Morrison). Upon entering Cornell at 16 years of age, Reich studied philosophy- focusing specific attention to the compositions of Paul Wittgenstein (Morrison). Wittgenstein was involved in a serious accident, leaving him with just his left arm, and so created piano arrangements designed to be played with one hand (Oram). Returning to Reich, he developed the use of repeating patterns in his music after he collaborated with Terry Riley on “In C” (Morrison). It is with this theory of repeating patterns that Reich’s unique musical philosophy developed.…
