The domestic extremist spectrum has changed considerably throughout the years since 1966. One of the most significant extremist figures since that time was Timothy McVeigh. McVeigh was a lone wolf with radical right wing beliefs, he was completely anti-government, but did not act as part of a militia group. Timothy McVeigh was a leaderless terrorist that to a lesser extent, sympathized with the right wing ideology of groups like the Ku Klux Klan, The National Alliance, The Christian Identity Movement, and Militia groups (Baysinger, 2006). McVeigh was responsible for the deadliest act of domestic terrorism occurred during the last 50 years.

Surely, there were other right-wing and Islamic extremist more deadly than Essex, but his inclusion shows that extremism comes from various places. The deadliest domestic attacks since 1966 claimed the lives of 307 people (ADL, 2015, p. 6). These three individuals alone were responsible for 74 percent of such deaths. The most deadly right wing extremists of the past fifty years were influenced, in some cases more than others, by the Klan’s

Left-wing extremist organizations like the Black Panther Party became the greatest domestic threat to the nation from the 1960s to the 1980s and were replaced by right wing radicals during the 90s (Watson, 2002). Similar to the Klan’s ideology, these black separatists also proclaimed racial division and hate towards whites. As the Klan influenced McVeigh, Mark Essex was thought to have been heavily influenced by the Black Panther Party during the months leading to the shootings that made him so infamous (Hustmyre, 2011, p. 3). A fundamental connection can be drawn between these significant groups and the most deadly domestic extremist attacks in U.S. since

In today’s American society, political ideologies have split into a rift unlike any other in 21st Century America. While most Americans still identify as politically moderate, the divide between the far left and center and the far right and center continue to expand. Domestic terrorism is a major concern for every citizen of the United States as well as government offices. A domestic terrorist act is different from an international terrorism event due to those involved with making them happen (Dempsey & Forst, 2016). The acts carried out by individuals or groups, formed solely in the United States without international ties, are considered to be domestic. The Oklahoma City bombing orchestrated by Timothy McVeigh in 1995 is an event that stands out in my mind when I think of domestic terrorism. I was a sophomore in high school at the time, it was on that day I saw first hand how cruel an individual could actually be.…

The label “lone wolf” is a construct of the media and of radical political actors themselves, rather than a social science concept or legal terminology. Lone wolf terrorism has evolved into a phenomenon which can be credited by the media’s perception. A lone wolf terrorist is just that, alone, so the conflation of lone wolves with small cells or “lone wolf packs,” which similarly lack hierarchical organizational structure, confuses, rather than clarifies, definitional and conceptual…

Paper 6 In his book The Condemnation of Blackness: Race, Crime, and the Making of Modern Urban America, author Khalil Gibran Muhammad works to answer a series of questions surrounding the “statistical link between blackness and criminality” (1), focusing on the core historical actors and the circumstances that were constructed to allow for the current reality that while African-Americans make up 12 percent of the general population, they make up 30 percent of the prison population (4). The issue becomes less about whether or not the committed crimes are real, but more about how the concept of Blackness historically became intrinsically linked with criminal behavior– so much so that criminality is undeniably linked with the image of the Black…
