April 19 has become an infamous day for our Nation. It marks the date in which the Branch Davidian in Waco, Texas was raided by the Federal Bureau of Investigations in 1993. Where 80 Americans including 24 children were killed in a fire that was set to straw and gasoline while the FBI raided their compound (PBS). The leader there was David Koresh who led his people in a shootout following with a mass suicide against the government raid. This in turn would be the reason for what led to the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 1995 (PBS). McVeigh had referred to The Turner Diaries for his recipe for his truck bomb with some of his own variances applied to it. Although, some of the ingredients were difficult to get. McVeigh and Nichols would make calls around the country until they could purchase what they needed. He used tovex sausages, and ammonium nitrate fertilizer, blasting caps, and nitromethane racing fuel in order to make the bomb more potent so it would cause more damage (PBS). Then after building the bomb at a nearby lake with the help of Nichols. McVeigh would drive the Ryder alone to the loading dock at the Federal Building where he lit the fuses and left the scene on foot. At 9:02 am the bomb exploded destroying the Federal Building and damaging many other buildings and cars around it.
There were at times up to a thousand people that were in the building at any one time. The death toll totaled out to be 168 people with 19 of them children and over 500 people injured in the blast (Oklahoma City Bombing Fast Facts).
