Timeline Events and Parallels

1.) Event number one is my birth, I was born in the U.A.E., on June 25 2001. The parallel in Jesus’s life is his birth in Bethlehem, which we celebrate on Christmas, which will be Dec. 25 2016 this liturgical year. As a symbol I drew a manger which is where Jesus was born.

2.) Event two is my family’s move to Toronto, Ontario in Dec 2004, when I was 3 years old. The parallel in Jesus’s life is when Joseph and Mary flee to Egypt with baby Jesus, due to King Herod trying to kill infant boys (Matthew 2: 13-15). The symbol I drew was a pyramid, which just represents Egypt.

3.) Event three is my Baptism, which was a little unusual because I was four at the time. The parallel to this is Jesus’s Baptism in the Jordan River by John the Baptist. We celebrate

The parallel to this is the last Supper where Jesus gave the disciples the Body and Bread of Christ. We celebrate this on Holy Thursday, which is Mar. 24/16 this liturgical year. The symbol for this event is a loaf of bread, which represents the Body of Christ.

9.) Event nine is me winning 3 chess tournaments over 3 years. And I could not find a parallel for this event.

10.) Event ten is the birth of my cousin, Mia, on Feb. 14/12. The parallel to this is the birth of John the Baptist who was Jesus’s second cousin. I drew John at the Jordan River in the wilderness, which is where John baptized Jesus.

11.) Event eleven is my Confirmation in Gr. 7. The parallel to this is when Jesus filled the disciples with the Holy Spirit. We celebrate this as Pentecost, which will be May 15/16 this liturgical year. The symbol for Pentecost is a Paschal candle because it represents Easter.

12.) Event twelve is my family’s move to North Vancouver in 2014. The parallel to this in Jesus’s life is when Jesus went throughout Israel preaching the Word of God. The symbol for this is a bullhorn, which represents Jesus speaking and teaching many

When you walk into a church you may realize that there are serval paintings, but what you may have not noticed is their significance. If you look at each painting closely you may notice that they tell a story. The Nativity with the Prophets Isaiah and Ezekiel is a piece of art history which uses iconography and religion to create a narrative. The Nativity is not only a piece of art, but it also is an altarpiece. Since an altar is where offerings for a church are held, the images that appeared on the altarpiece carry the most significance.…

The passage of Isaiah 7:1-25 in which Isaiah reassures king Ahaz that the plot against Judah will not stand because God is on his side. For this reason, the Lord gives Ahaz a sign about the baby named Immanuel. I disagree with Carvalho that the woman and her child were just a literary device to mark time in the oracle. I believe that this passage predicts the birth of Jesus Christ. In the next few paragraphs I will explain the reasons why I am making this statement and I am also going to back it up with examples.…

In this activity, I will be describing my feeling on a few different things. My feelings before Jesus identified himself after he identified himself, and what I would have done if I were to see someone walking to words me on water while I'm in the boat. I would have been scared before he revealed himself because at that time when I see someone walking on water I would be thinking about the five w's. Once he would have revealed himself I would believe him because walking on water is a miracle something that only can be done by God's power. I would praise him for who he is and how powerful he is.…

I really like the image called "Those Who Love Me Will Keep My Word". In this image it shows two people who are obviously starving and the one on top is holding the other and feeding him something from a bowl. I interpret the image as Jesus (on top) giving his strength and hope to someone else (on the bottom). I chose this representation of Jesus because Jesus is the definition of strength and grace, he will help anyone before himself. When Jesus was on earth he helped anyone who needed it; the blind, poor, and those who were weak.…

One important aspect of this story is its location, placed in the middle of the story of Jesus’ healing of Jarius’ daughter. The story of the hemorrhaging woman’s healing interrupts that of the rising of Jairus’ daughter as Jesus makes his way to Jairus’ house. After the woman is healed, the story of Jairus’ daughter is continued and concluded. Since all three synoptic gospels keep the placement of the hemorrhaging woman in the middle of the story about Jairus’ daughter, it can be assumed that Matthew and Luke kept Mark’s original intercalation in order to preserve a theme of one or both of the stories. On the surface, the recipients of the miracles in either story hold nothing in common.…

and on top of that the Pentecost is the birthday of the church we celebrate the birthday of Jesus, the day he died, and Easter before we celebrate the birthday of the church. Art has been an evolving subject throughout history that has been influenced by religious customs and biblical texts around the world. Artists have depicted various religious practices and stories through their works in numerous ways which has allowed their culture and religious beliefs to expand across the globe where a biblical text may have not had the opportunity to influence. The biblical representations found in the Descent of Christ into Limbo, which was created in Peru in the mid-17th century as an oil medium, is a prime example of how the biblical story of Jesus dying on the cross and descending to Limbo to liberate those who died before him has expanded cultural and religious beliefs across the globe. Additionally, Our Lady of Bethlehem with a Male Donor created in Cuzco, Peru in the…

In the short story, The Gospel According to Mark, author Jorge Louis Borges puts his own individual twist on a story, or shall I say stories, that are as old as time - the Great Flood and the Crucifixion of Jesus. In this work, Borges uses biblical allusions, character types, and sex to retell an age-old tale. From the onset of the story, it is clear that Borges is intent on depicting the main character and protagonist, Espinosa, as a holy figure. He describes Espinosa as having “unlimited kindness” and a “capacity for public speaking” - the first two hints indicating that the reader is figuratively in the presence of a higher being, one who greatly symbolizes that of Jesus.…

Over the course of the second half of this class’s readings, one reads into the latter and larger part of the Old Testament, as well as the earlier portion of the New Testament. This provides a nice transitionary period in realizing the connection between some of the Messianic and other prophecies made in the prophetic books of the Old Testament with the realizations of those prophecies in the New Testament, with both the exile of Israel, and the birth and life of Jesus Christ. Immediately following the previous reflective journal, the class read the books of Judges. This book is one of my favorite books of the Old Testament, and of the entire Bible. Solely speaking of the literature content of the book, I love the way it reads and the intense…
