Through the use of symbolism, diction, and imagery, Gwendolyn Brooks demonstrates that even during times of struggle and worthlessness, we can reflect upon what we have, which consist of our memories and experiences we’ve shared with loved ones, which ultimately makes us rich. Gwendolyn Brooks, the poet of the poem, “The Bean Eaters,” illustrates this powerful theme by painting vivid imagery for her reader. “They eat beans mostly, this old yellow pair.” (1) Brooks provides this meaningful quote to convey many aspects and to thoroughly enable the reader to grasp the overall theme. The “they” the author refers to is an older couple, hinted at by the words “old” and “pair.”…

Suddenly, she wants to finish the scarf before the sun goes down but she can’t avoid drifting her eyes towards the window and looking at a giant tree dripped by the early morning dew. The tree has aged immensely and it somehow resembles her, she thinks the texture of the bark looks like the wrinkles on her body. When determining the age of a tree one knows that they must look no further than at the number of tree rings, each ring representing a new year, and this idea of aging marks is paralleled with human skin in Toni Morrison’s novel Beloved. Morrison’s Beloved focuses on characters who experience the struggles of being a slave in America. Although not all of the characters experienced slavery firsthand, each character has a connection to the horrific consequences that come with both being a slave and attempting to escape towards a life of freedom. The novel introduces the reader to characters of varying ages and a reader may believe that age alone is enough to determine a character’s life experience, yet this is not the case. A character’s perceived age can be deceiving and only through an examination of the wearing on their skin can the reader get a sense of true experiences that character has faced.…
