Often times the rote memorization of mathematical problems lead to the stress and anxiety of students. As Jill Barshay says in her argument, “A 2013 University of Chicago study found that the working memory portion of the brain becomes blocked in stressed students and they cannot access the math facts that they know.” The timed tests in which teachers use cause students to experience extreme stress. Although the timed tests help teachers better understand how well the student has mastered the material, it often causes the student an unfortunate amount of stress. The stress and anxiety caused by these timed tests build up over time and confidence drops drastically.
