Timed Writing Style Analysis

Improved Essays
Timed writing pieces are very challenging because writing the perfect piece is far from achievable. There’s always a feeling that you could’ve added more or read it one last time but sometimes time won’t prevail. Although, a perfect piece can be achievable through revision. I believe revising a piece with fresh eyes gives you a better perspective of your writing style and helps you choose things that will enhance your piece. Most of my revisions were not grammatical but for the need to add more substance. Whether it was adding more detail to my paragraphs or putting more emphasis on point-adding substance was key to my revision.
One thing that I knew needed to be revisited was my first example. Referring to earlier I had said that my main

When Tomlinson talks about revising to be “refining ore”, I think that this perfectly explains my process of revising. “One’s first draft, one’s first way of approaching the problem—even one’s first 50 ways of approaching it—may not work”, drafting and coming up with the best final draft…

In Richard Connell’s writing the many techniques he uses are unique and make his stories very distinctive because his background is reflected in his style and themes of his writing. “Richard Connell has a writing style that sets him apart from other writers of the time. Most of his stories were of the action-adventure genre, allowing his writing style to be fast paced and concise. It is through this technique that makes Connell’s stories, engaging” (Mangold). The action-adventure theme makes the pace of his stories fast, but smooth.…

Getting the attention of kindergarteners can be hard sometimes, one way to grab their short attention is by telling them a secret. VanNess starts one of her first writing lessons by telling her students a secret and that secret is that “kindergarteners can write!” (574) When she tells her students they can write, she sees faces light up all around her. VanNess starts out the lessons with something simple and gives some examples of ways to use the word I. She models with the students and once they start to get comfortable with the word she releases them to do it on their own.…

To improve this paragraph, I discussed what the emotional appeal of the paper was, what tone was set, and how that tied in to the style, in greater detail than the previous paragraphs. You also mentioned that throughout my document I did not introduce my sources or information, so that was a main target in my revisions. For example, on my claims and evidence I introduced the article where a man discussed his changing opinion of hip hop music that I did not previously. Then, later on in the paper when discussing the content, I introduced the study that was performed by a group of researchers that was cited in the paragraph. My logical fallacies were also brought up, and it was stated that I needed more examples,…

“The Power of One” also demonstrated my improved method of writing my introduction and conclusion paragraphs. I was sure to begin my essay in an interesting way by opening with a rhetorical question. On top of that I introduced the idea of “the power of one” and continued this idea by concluding my essay with it as well. In addition, in “Shift to Reality” I feel my paragraph development was strong and thorough as I examined the depth at which William Golding brings his novel to a satisfying conclusion. On the other hand, I still feel I struggle with sentence structure and awkward wording as shown in my ALS Ice Bucket Challenge essay.…

Reflective writing as a genre allows for a combination of personal reflection and critical thinking all intertwined into one. I turned my reflection essay into a new reflection that focused on a different level of the education system that would allow for me to reflect on my first semester of college to back up my allegations against the school system. When attempting to revise my essay in a new way I reread my old one and found an interesting theme screaming out of the paper. It was saying, “high school and Regents did not prepare me for college.” I took the idea a little further and expanded it to the SAT, that is a similar testing style to Regents, that similarly did not prepare me for college, and through research I found that income status…

It is a very important part of my writing process to put a paper down for at least twenty-four hours, which hopefully include a decent amount of sleep, and come back to it with a fresh mind. I think this gives me a much better understanding of what needs to be developed and what is useless information. Depending on time constraints for the paper I will try to pick it back up the next day and go through the first reread, which will be my first attempt a the first step of my revising…

For my rhetorical and visual analysis paper, I chose to write about the visual storytelling of an art school’s ad and how it was weak in its presentation. When I decided to write my thoughts on this topic, I wanted to illustrate my professional opinion on advertising and how important it is to touch on all aspects of rhetoric when working on a visual. I also wanted to include this essay rather than my rhetorical narrative paper because I was much more passionate on the topic of analyzing this advertisement. I had much more to talk about within the analysis and found that I also cared about identifying the flaws within the ad more than I did telling a personal story. All the feedback I was given in class was incredibly helpful, as I was able to pick up on what aspects of rhetoric I was lacking in my final draft.…

“The Maker’s Eye” In the article “The Maker’s Eye” by Donald Murray, the author explains the aspects of rewriting and how writing isn't a one step process. Murray mentions Peter F. Drucker, a prolific business writer, who claims that his first draft is “the zero draft.”…
