Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, and Martin Luther King, JR. a lot of Americans lost faith. None more than the left wing youth. Many of these people hated Nixon, and had lost hope in their leaders and in the American government. Many of these young people went on the freedom rides, helping African Americans in the south to vote. There was also the Free Speech Movement, a protest that took place at Berkeley. Students wanted to be able to express what they believed in on campus without the censorship of the administration. Major movements during the 1970s were the antiwar movement and the women’s rights movement. Many Americans were done with the Vietnam War, but none more than the youth of America. They were tired of presidents saying they were going to get out of the war and not doing it. They held campaigns and rally’s and opposed the draft. Also the women’s rights movement took off during the 70s, this is known as the second wave for women’s rights. Such women as Betty Friedan, who wrote the Feminine Mystique and Gloria Steinem are both iconic during this time. Women fought for such as issues as rights to abortion, and birth control. They also wanted equal rights. Many of things that women wanted were achieved, and some they are still fighting for today. Also during this time was a historic event known as “Woodstock”.
