“So I guess you must’ve killed somebody.” The daughter in the story asked her father if he had killed someone before since the father keeps on writing war stories. Mood, character, and point of view are three literary elements in Time O’ Brien’s story “Ambush” that contribute to his theme of don’t do something you would regret. The first literary element O’ Brien uses is mood.
The author uses foreshadowing to build the mood that shows the main character had killed someone before. “When she was nine, my daughter Kathleen asked if I had ever killed anyone.” The quote signals a hint about the main’s character’s conflict that later reveals in the story. O’ Brien uses mood a second time for the same effect.

“…his shoulder slightly stooped…” The main character remembers every specific detail about the person who he killed. The main character’s action was so dramatic he couldn’t forget. Both of these example show that the main character remembers every detail of that day due to his action. The third literary element O’ Brien use is point of view.
The author uses simile to show how he contributed to building the point of view. “I want to say to her that as little girl...” The text shows that the story is being narrated in first person by a war veteran. O’ Brien uses point of view a second time for the same effect.
He uses irony to show the main character’s point of view. “It was not a matter of live or die.” The quote is ironic because there was no point killing the young man. There was no threat or danger. The given example shows that the main character action has no purpose and ending up regretting it.
Mood, character, and point of view are three literary elements in Tim O’ Brien’s story “Ambush” that contribute to his theme of don’t do something you would regret.
