Time Management: Basis for Success Time management has been a problem for college students for as long as anyone can remember. If time is not spent on grades, then grades will suffer. If time is not spent on a job, then there is no source of income to pay for college. Lastly, if time is not spent on a social life, then loneliness creeps in. How is it possible to maintain all of it? Believe it or not, the skills to manage time properly can be done. It takes hard work and consistency, like developing a good habit. Time management is imperative if one wants to maintain academic, employment, and social success. If one does not have good time management skills, starting with the basics can be a good first step in achieving the skills. The basics of these skills include: making a list, setting deadlines, stop multi-tasking, use downtime wisely, and reward yourself when done (White). Making a list can really work if it is actually used. Anything can be put on it due dates, reminders, importance of assignments etc. The list can be an extremely helpful tool of time management. Multi-tasking as something that is done by many people thinking they are getting more done in the same amount of time, but in reality, it’s not always true. The quality of work being done by someone who multitasks is usually not as good as someone who focuses on things one at a time. This applies to college as well. Spend time focusing on one assignment at a time, and success will be more easily found, even if it does take more time. Lastly, rewarding yourself is a huge part of time management. Say someone has spent the last two weeks writing an essay, and the grade comes back as an A. That calls for a reason to celebrate. Take a short amount of time to unwind and reflect on the good work that has been accomplished. For some people, these skills don’t work, and extra help is needed. There are classes and seminars that are offered online, and some even for free, that focus on proper time management skills.
