The welfare system today faces lots of problems and is out of shape, so it needs to be changed. With poverty and more people on welfare today, how are taxpayers going to save money? Some of these changes include time limits on benefits and requiring welfare recipients to take drug tests. This is a bad situation with those in lower classes. How is this system going to be fixed with high drug use and taxpayers losing money? To limit the problems with the welfare reform system, there should be time limits on benefits and drug tests should be mandatory. First of all, there should be time limits on benefits. Most states have made procedures for the limits. Since forty eight states have some type of limit, this can help prevent messing up the welfare reform system. All states have exceptions to time limits, like medical illnesses. However, normal people being on welfare without restrictions may be eventually become a problem as people would end up not being able to pay taxes. Most of these states have restrictions no less than five years, which should be enough for families, excluding seventeen states. For example, people receiving welfare benefits are most likely not working for their own money as they are receiving it from the government. Those in welfare are usually in poverty and some stay out of work just to keep getting money. Laziness only leads to more laziness as children of welfare recipients may eventually learn that they do not need to work when they get older. Today’s welfare programs can cost up to a trillion dollars per year for taxpayers. People should realize that they are on welfare until they start working. If poverty rates go down and less people are on welfare just to get money, then it would save lots of money for taxpayers.
