During Friday night’s game against the Detroit Pistons, Minnesota’s starting point guard Zach LaVine went down hard halfway through the 3rd quarter clutching his left knee. Nevertheless LaVine managed to get up and continue playing throughout the quarter finally sitting out in the fourth. Unfortunately for the Timberwolves the Pistons pulled through and won the game 116-108, while LaVine finished with 20-4-4 on 9-13 shooting. Fast forward to Saturday, the Timberwolves released a statement revealing the stunning news that LaVine had a torn ACL in his left knee and was out for the season.
Zach LaVine who is set to have surgery on his left knee sometime in the future, was having a career defining season averaging 18.9 ppg, 3 apg, and 3.4 rpg. This season in particular was supposed to be exciting for LaVine seeing as he wanted to alter his game so that he wouldn’t just be known for his phenomenal dunks. Zach LaVine is without a doubt one of the best players on the Timberwolves team and his absence will be evident throughout the rest of the season. LaVine had opted out of the dunk contest to focus on this season. Avoiding all-star weekend would allow him to rest (averaging 37.2 mpg in 47 games) and focus on getting his team to the playoffs. Alas his plans have gone awry. Minnesota is currently 19-32 equivalent to the Pelicans but 13th in the western conference, while the Nuggets are chilling in the 8th seed (22-28).
