Timberview: A Narrative Fiction

To most people, Timberview seemed like your normal town. It had a few markets, a police station, a hospital, a fire department, and everything else you would expect. You would think Timberview was all happy and stuff, but only the townsfolk knew what Timberview really was. Every year, the population slowly decreased because of how crime-filled Timberview was. For over a year, it hadn’t changed a bit other than the fact that every thief or robber had been caught. This was because of the almighty and great Professor Payton. People called him a wizard because of how wise and sage he was. He always caught the thief and was always at the scene of the crime to serve justice to the innocent townsfolk.
One nice and quiet day, a man barged through the professor’s office door and yelled, “Professor! Professor! The jewels are missing!” In disbelief, he realized the professor was actually sleeping through all his commotion, so he gently tapped him. The professor didn’t seem to wake up but instead snored more. He knew what he had to do. Just like most mothers would do, he yelled, “Wake up. . . ! Wake up. . . ! Wake up!” Finally, the professor woke up and the man told him that the jewels from the local shop were missing.

He was stumped because all he found were some papers with nothing on them; they just smelled like onions. Police officers were brought onto the case and it seemed that the man, or possibly a few men, were also wanted in twenty-three other cities across Canada! This made the crime scene a lot more intense.
As a few days passed, the stench of onions was still there, and the professor finally found out how to solve the case! He brought the papers to the police station the next day and explained how he had cracked the case! He stated that onion juice could be used as invisible ink and would show under a high-voltage light

The author's use of word choice, Imagery, and organization to help support the detectives misunderstanding. The authors use of negative diction, helps heighten the sense nervousness and need for curiosity. The author continues to use words such as “dark,” “hard-coal black,” and ”empty fireplace.”…

Peter William Sutcliffe otherwise known as ‘The Yorkshire Ripper ' was arrested on January 1st, 1981 after a murderous spree which spanned five years and claimed the lives of 13 women and attempting to murder a further seven (see appendix for details of victims). The case engulfed the nation as one of the most brutal in modern history since that of ‘Jack the Ripper ' in the 1800 's hence why the media adopted the term ‘Yorkshire ripper ' when addressing the case. Although known for the heinous crimes and number of them the case is also infamous for the failings of the West Yorkshire Police force in its hunt of Sutcliffe. The tension throughout West Yorkshire left neighbour suspecting neighbour and women afraid to be out at night alone. Despite the efforts of the police force, it was a standard patrol with an experienced officer who was training another that caught Sutcliffe and brought an end to his spree.…

The author of this passage uses tone to try to convey the idea that the narrator’s perspective towards the tree has changed over time. In the first paragraph, the author uses strong diction that represents power to create the intimidating and dark tone. Phrases such as “artillery piece,” “huge lone spike,” “forbidding,” and “dominating” are all used in the very short, one sentence-long first paragraph. These set the dark and intimidating tone of the paragraph, which allows the narrator to convey that he/she had perceived the tree as threatening and as a superior.…

Junipers maroon plastic pod glimmered in the afternoon light as the ferris wheel began its climb to the top. Juniper -- a 13 year old from Boston -- had chosen to come on this cruise to get a view of the city, as her parents stayed at the bottom. Her family had come to Seattle on Summer vacation to try to escape the constant dysphoria of everyday life, so far this venture had the opposite effect. From the ferris wheel Juniper started noticing black vans scattered through the city. Even though each vehicle was agleam in light, these vans seemed to give off an aura of foreboding.…

When I was very little, walking up the trail with a pack on my back and the dog at my side, I would reach out and pull leaves from the bushes and trees. I would tear off corners, smooth the edges, and they would be turned into spaceships, flying across a lush alien world. Sometimes the trail, worn down into the ground over time by paws and hooves, would climb its way up onto the crests of ridges and meander across the moist, mossy fringes of muskegs. The rough, black and gnarled spruce branches that grew there were pirate spacecraft, pursued by the sleek birch branches from beyond the muskeg's soggy borders. As imaginary lasers and rockets exploded against the ships' hulls, I would rip off little pieces of bark and let them fall to the forest floor.…

After two lessons of learning, I have benefited much from them. I enjoyed the stories of Cathedral and Hills like White Elephant. The narrative structures of these two stories are very different, but they all have one thing in common, which is their fascinating ways of expression to create conflicts and tensions. In the masterpiece of Cathedral by Raymond Carver, the narrative style along with the well constructed architect of the story and theme combines together to form an excellent story. Cathedral has a first person narrative style, the first person narrator tells the story in fragments of sentences, often short and simple, like “This blind man, an old friend of my wife 's, he was on his way to spend the night.…
