Timber has been used as a commodity to build homes since times immemorial. Even now, the craze for timbered homes has not diminished at all. Many people across the world love timber. Thus, they have a desire to build a timber house for themselves. Style, comfort and protection are what can be guaranteed to dwellers of timber houses. Style because of the various architectural designs which can be achieved from timber, comfort because they provide thermal insulation such that dwellers can feel comfortable both in summers and in winters, and protection because timber houses can be strengthened enough to fight the atrocities of nature. Firstly, labour cost is an important factor and depends upon the promoting agency doing the project. Secondly, timber cost is another important factor and keeps varying with the market values. Thirdly, the size of the timber-framed house, the building materials to be used (other than timber) and the interior decoration features also decide the cost. Firstly, timber homes provide an excellent insulation. Dwellers shall feel warm in winters and cool in summers. This is because wood is a good heat insulator. Hence, during summers the warm air outside is prevented from entering the house, and during winters the warm air is trapped indoors. Hence, dwellers of timber houses can experience a comfortable stay in all seasons. Secondly, though it may involve chopping of trees, timber houses have other environmental benefits. Due to insulation benefits, they save energy consumed by coolers in summers and heaters in winters. Also, because of this, thin layers of timber are sufficient compared to thick blocks of concrete, enhancing living space by some 10-15% in the same footprint area. Thirdly, timbered houses are resistant to earthquakes and strong winds. One of the most earthquake- resistant structures is that made from timber. They can also be made to prevent damages from strong winds, hurricanes and cyclones too. Lastly, it is time efficient to build a timbered house.
