Around midnight, Timber arrives at his bungalow and notices his friend, Harry, still has the light on. Assuming his friend had fallen asleep while reading, Timber went to check on him but to his astonishment, Harry was still awake; he was lying perfectly still on the bed and gave no sign that he had heard Timber enter except for an urgent whisper. Puzzled, Timber obeyed his instructions and found out that a krait was fast asleep on Harry’s stomach under his blanket. After quietly exchanging ideas, Harry told Timber to phone a doctor. Time seemed to stop as Ganderbai steadily and skillfully maneuvered the thin rubber tube, previously used as a tourniquet, into an opening under the sheet; the tube moved so slowly it was almost impossible to tell that anything was happening. Nevertheless, after a long, tense wait, Doctor Ganderbai held up his hand for the small bottle of chloroform. The bottle was slowly emptied through the tube, then Ganderbai cautiously removed the tube and stood up. The 15 minute wait was excruciating but necessary as to make sure the krait was fast asleep when they removed the sheet. The two carefully removed the sheet and shockingly, there was nothing underneath. Still wary, Ganderbai warned Harry to be very cautious because the krait could be anywhere, maybe even up the leg of his pajamas, yet, upon hearing this, Harry stood up and began wildly jumping around. Timber and Doctor Ganderbai both thought Harry had been bitten and reached for the tourniquet and scalpel when Harry abruptly ceased and exclaimed “It’s not there!”. Sarcastically, Doctor Ganderbai asked if he was sure he had even seen a krait in the first

The unpredictable researcher Professor Hardwigg discovers headings to the center of the earth in an old book and sets out, alongside his nephew Henry and the guide Hans, to Iceland where they discover the mountain and the pole that permits them access to the profundities of the earth.
