Sam finds life extremely hard once his mum passes away, and he doesn’t have a sense of purpose or goals anymore. He struggles with dealing with his grief and turns to different forms of escapism, surfing, drinking and music. Zorn uses Australian colloquial language when describing elements of surfing, drinking and especially the 90s music scene. Winton uses a similar setting within his novel Breath. Both authors have used setting
